Job Title: Environmental Advisor
Location: Falmer Hybrid Working – Office and Site visits
Salary: up to £45,000 depending on skills and experience
About the role
As an Environmental Advisor, you’ll play a key role in managing environmental risk at project level, supporting the design, maintenance and construction of a diverse portfolio of infrastructure projects.
Working within the Enabling Team in Engineering Technical Services (ETS), you’ll provide expert environmental guidance from early design through to construction completion. You’ll help projects navigate environmental legislation and regulation, deliver practical mitigation solutions, and identify opportunities to enhance both the built and natural environment.
In addition to project support, you’ll also provide environmental advice to the wider business as required—making this a varied, visible and impactful role.
This role offers excellent development potential. You’ll have opportunities to deepen your technical expertise within ETS, work toward chartership, and take on increasing responsibility across larger and more complex infrastructure projects.
What you will be responsible for:
1. Undertaking environmental assessments across a range of projects
2. Producing clear, accurate reports, including well‑reasoned conclusions supported by evidence
3. Supporting effective stakeholder and regulator engagement to ensure alignment and “buy‑in”
4. Delivering high‑quality work to agreed standards and timescales
5. With support from senior colleagues, solving complex environmental challenges and developing appropriate mitigation strategies
6. Travelling to offices and project sites across the UK as required
7. Undertaking fieldwork, with some flexibility needed for early mornings, evenings or weekends
8. Actively managing your own continuing professional development, with guidance from your line manager
What you’ll bring to the role:
9. Relevant environmental degree
10. Postgraduate qualification in an environmental or related discipline
11. Up to 4 years’ experience in an environmental role
12. Strong organisational, written and verbal communication skills
13. A solid understanding of UK environmental legislation, policy and guidance
14. Experience working with environmental specialists or contributing to environmental appraisals
