Community Engagement Volunteer
We are looking for Community Engagement Volunteers based in Bridport, Dorset
What does Community Engagement mean?
Community Engagement is all about connecting with people in the community to understand their unique views and experiences. The South West is a big place, and each area is different. By getting to know people personally, we can learn what matters most to them and how we can help. It also means that some people might need support from Marie Curie but do not know it’s available. By being part of the community, we can let them know about the support available, so they can get the help they need now or in the future.
Marie Curie supports people who are facing death, dying, and bereavement – tricky topics to discuss. That’s why it’s important to go where people are, to be creative and approachable, so we can open up the conversation. By doing so, we help people feel more comfortable talking about these sensitive subjects and ensure they get the support they need.
What will I be doing?
There are several parts to the role, and you can choose to focus on all three parts, or just one or two of the areas that you are most passionate about:
* Research: Explore online and in person to understand the people who live in the area, their strengths, challenges, and the support available to them.
* Building Relationships: Establish and maintain connections with GP surgeries, libraries, and other professional spaces. Provide educational materials, monitor stock levels, maintain displays, and engage with people to understand their needs.
* Engaging with People: Seek opportunities to speak with local people, both one‑on‑one and in group settings, listening to their experiences, priorities, and the barriers they have to accessing support.
* Local Support: Identify and build trusting relationships with both large and small organisations. Share information about Marie Curie’s support and work together to benefit the entire community.
* Events: Attend Marie Curie events and seek local opportunities to represent the charity at external events. Discuss topics such as death, dying, and bereavement to understand local people’s experiences and needs.
* Social Media: Use social media and online profiles to promote Marie Curie’s support and to connect with residents in alternative ways, helping to reduce barriers and ensure everyone has the opportunity to share their views.
