Job Title: Payroll Manager – Bureau

We’re working with a well-established and growing payroll bureau seeking a Payroll Manager to lead the delivery of high-quality payroll services across a diverse client portfolio. As Payroll Manager, you will take ownership of a portfolio of clients, ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of payroll services while leading and developing a team of payroll professionals. You’ll play a key role in maintaining service excellence, strengthening client relationships, and driving process improvements across the function.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage end-to-end payroll operations for a portfolio of bureau clients across multiple pay cycles.
* Lead, mentor, and develop a team of payroll professionals, ensuring high performance and engagement.
* Act as the main point of contact for key clients, building strong relationships and providing expert payroll guidance.
* Ensure full compliance with UK payroll legislation, including HMRC, RTI, pensions, and statutory requirements.
* Oversee payroll reviews, reconciliations, and sign-off processes to ensure accuracy and quality.
* Manage escalations and resolve complex payroll queries efficiently.
* Support the onboarding of new clients, including system setup and process alignment.
* Drive continuous improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and client experience.
* Collaborate with senior leadership on resource planning, service delivery, and operational strategy.
About You
* Proven experience in a payroll bureau or multi-client payroll environment.
* Strong technical knowledge of UK payroll legislation and compliance.
* Experience managing or supervising a payroll team.
* Confident in a client-facing role, with excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
* Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
* Experience with payroll systems such as Sage, STAR, Iris, or similar.
