Job overview

Lung Cancer Screening is a ground-breaking programme of work in England which will contribute to the ambition of the NHS Long Term Plan to improve early diagnosis of lung cancer and survival for those diagnosed with lung cancer. NHSE has recently confirmed that the Lung Cancer Screening programme has become a new national screening programme. The programme is being offered to those most at risk of developing lung cancer, people aged 55 to 74 year old who have ever smoked. We are seeking to recruit an experienced nurse to lead the South East London Programme as we continue our roll out across the region. If you are experienced in the respiratory or lung cancer field and are seeking a new rewarding challenge we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job

1. Take clinical responsibility for assessing and supervising individual cases for eligibility
2. Demonstrate a collaborative working style and provide clinical supervision where necessary
3. Work collaboratively with external partners and participate in key developments relating to the programme
4. Take action on clinical findings and act a resource for escalation within the team
5. Participate in SRM meeting preparation and other multidisciplinary meetings where necessary
6. Liaise with the SRM co-ordinators prior to the weekly meetings
7. Ensure that appropriate action is taken when clinical findings are identified as part of onward referrals including any add-on investigations such as spirometry and further imaging.
8. Timely management of the referrals to 2ww clinics and coordinating the clinical work up of participants in secondary care.
9. Ensure clinical data and information are entered into the appropriate clinical system with a focus on data completeness
10. Participate in internal and external audits, monitor programme performance

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse Specialist / Responsible Assessor for the Lung Cancer Screening programme is a key role working with patients, clinicians, and other partners, to assist in implementing the Lung Cancer Screening programme across South East London. It is an integral part of the overall programme governance structure, working with the South East London Cancer Alliance and external partners.

The post holder will continually oversee and monitor the clinical programme and where appropriate, the assessment and management of participants. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with clinicians and stakeholders across the boroughs of Southwark, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham, Bromley and Bexley to ensure patients are referred in a timely manner. You will be involved in community engagement as we work to spread the word about the screening programme and ensure access to the service for all who are eligible.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced nurse with significant leadership experience and a passion for service development. You will need to have relevant clinical experience, be able to demonstrate a collaborative working style, have a passion to develop an evolving services and be agile in meeting deadlines whilst prioritising tasks and workloads in an ever changing service. We are seeking a patient centred individual with excellent communication skills who can demonstrate compassion and a desire to deliver excellent care in line with our trust values.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

11. RN1 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality.
12. Mentorship course
13. Post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or equivalent post qualification experience

Experience

Essential criteria

14. Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area delivering effective patient focused care
15. Proven evidence of management / leadership skills and autonomous practice
16. Experience of audit, research & evidence based care

Desirable criteria

17. Experience in lung cancer screening
18. Experience of delivering change management or service development

Skills / Knowledge / Ability

Essential criteria

19. Advanced clinical, managerial and leadership skills in specialty
20. Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
21. Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal & communication skills
22. IT Skills
23. Ability to carry out audit and research
