Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Chief Registrar post in Adult Critical Care Medicine for a 6 or 12‑month period commencing in August 2026. The role is ideal for candidates with anaesthetic experience who aim to advance their CV and develop ICM and acute care skills within a tertiary teaching ICU, whilst gaining leadership experience. Applicants should have at least 2 years post‑foundation experience in any acute specialty, with a minimum of 12 months in Anaesthesia, and should be at ST5 or above in Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia. The post provides 40% protected time for local initiatives such as service improvement, engagement, education, workforce planning and sustainability.


Main Duties

* Serve as a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers and the trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale.
* Lead service improvement efforts such as redesigning pathways, implementing new technology and establishing new services to enhance patient flow and outcomes.
* Improve clinical and non‑clinical education and training activities, mentoring other trainees to engage in quality improvement.
* Participate in workforce planning and optimise trainee deployment to meet service needs and improve morale.
* Work across teams and boundaries to engage stakeholders in quality improvement and influence change.
* Attend departmental, directorate and care group management meetings to understand management and the wider socio‑economic impact on healthcare delivery.
* Operate a Senior (Airway) Critical Care on‑call rota, leading junior resident doctors under the support of the Duty Critical Care Consultant.
* Complete up to 60% clinical commitments, with duties at QMC and City campuses tailored to training needs.


Person Specification

Essential
* Full registration with the General Medical Council and fit to practice.
* ST5 or above in Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia, not holding a CCT or within 12 (ideally 18) months of training completion.
* Approval of Training Programme Director.
* Satisfactory progress through training with at least satisfactory ARCP outcomes.
* Evidence of clinical competencies in Intensive Care Medicine/Anaesthesia appropriate for your stage in training.
* Ability to prioritise clinical need, maximise safety, minimise risk, and work independently where appropriate.
* Understanding of research methods, ethical issues, and evidence‑based practice.
* Effective team working, leadership, and self‑awareness with multi‑source feedback or workplace assessments.
* Active involvement in quality improvement, audit, or research projects focusing on patient safety and clinical innovation.
* Experience in teaching with positive feedback on teaching approaches.
* Strong written and spoken communication, active listening, empathy, persuasive influence, and negotiation skills.
* Logical and creative problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.
* Efficient organisational and planning skills, including time management, prioritisation, and resilience.
* Ability to build and lead multidisciplinary teams, motivate others, and support quality improvement initiatives.
Desirable
* Additional relevant degree (intercalated, masters or doctorate).
* Evidence of academic achievements such as publications or presentations.
* Involvement in local management systems, leadership of innovations, or improvements.
* Understanding of the NHS context, including economic and political influences.
* Portfolio of audit / quality improvement projects with closed audit loops.
* Publishing experience in clinical or non‑clinical topics.
* Experience in the development of teaching programmes or participation in education courses.
