Local Taxation Officer Location: Oxford Council Contract: 3-month ongoing contract Rate: Competitive umbrella rate The Role We're seeking an experienced Local Taxation Officer to join Oxford Council's Revenues team. You'll play a key role in the billing, collection and recovery of Council Tax and Business Rates, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and excellent customer service. Key Responsibilities Maintain and update records for Council Tax, Business Rates and related government grants. Process correspondence and verify liabilities using council and external databases (e.g. VOA, Companies House, Land Registry). Apply exemptions, discounts, reliefs and discretionary reductions in line with legislation. Liaise with internal departments, enforcement agents, collection agencies and external stakeholders. Support court proceedings when required, and ensure schedules are kept up to date with the VOA. Monitor accounts, apply recovery actions, and trace absconded charge payers where necessary. Provide welfare and financial advice, safeguarding vulnerable charge payers and signposting to support services. Ensure GDPR compliance and confidentiality across all casework. Mentor new staff and contribute to continuous improvement of the Revenues Service. About You Strong knowledge of Council Tax, Business Rates and local government finance legislation (e.g. LGFA 1992). Skilled in using revenues systems and external portals (VOA, Companies House, Land Registry). Experienced in recovery, tracing, debt management and customer service. Ability to handle challenging conversations with tact and professionalism. Flexible, proactive, and confident in working with both individuals and large organisations.
