A vacancy at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This post is a full-time, fixed-term (six months) Registered Dental Nurse position within a multidisciplinary team to support the speciality and ensure a high standard of patient care. The role provides an opportunity to develop and expand your skills as a dental nurse.
The successful candidate will be registered with the GDC and motivated to contribute to a high-performing team. The post includes work across multiple clinics and procedures and a focus on patient care and professional development.
Responsibilities
* Assist in clinics including Oral Surgery, Skin procedures under local anaesthetic, day surgery theatre lists, IV sedation, minor operations, Orthodontics, and Orthognathic-related clinics.
* Set up, prepare, and clean down surgery; maintain stock levels; assist clinicians in all clinics within the specialty; work as part of a team.
* Provide chair-side nursing in orthodontic and oral surgery clinics; assist with procedures under local anaesthetic, IV sedation, and general anaesthetic lasting up to an hour.
* Prepare medical and orthodontic notes for clinics and obtain investigation results from computerised systems (e.g., MRI and CT scans).
* Obtain orthodontic appliances from the laboratory; record and store patient study models.
* Support personal development and the development and supervision of others by maintaining specialist knowledge; act as a professional role model.
* Communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team; provide advice and information following procedures or relating to specialist conditions, including emotionally distressing situations.
Qualifications and experience
* Active registration with The General Dental Council (GDC).
* Evidence of ongoing professional development through CPD maintenance.
* Experience in dental nursing and/or orthodontics is desirable; newly qualified nurses with relevant experience will be considered.
* Highly motivated, enthusiastic, compassionate, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to work in a team.
Additional information
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30 am–5:00 pm (Friday 8:30 am–4:30 pm).
Contract: Fixed-term for six months.

The post holder is responsible for maintaining a safe working environment and reducing cross-infection in line with Trust policy. You will communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives, and the multidisciplinary team, and organise chair-side nursing in orthodontic and oral surgery clinics. You may assist with procedures under local anaesthetic, IV sedation, and general anaesthetic (up to one hour). You will also be involved in organising, preparing, and assisting with specialist clinics (e.g., Orthognathic, Skin lists), preparing notes, and obtaining investigations from computer systems. You will be responsible for recording and storing patient study models and for personal professional development and supporting others with specialist knowledge. You should conduct yourself professionally and be a role model to others, ensuring patient attendance meets expectations with timely procedures and clear communication.
