Associate Civil Engineer Location: Manchester Salary: Competitive This position involves the design, planning, and supervision of a wide range of infrastructure and civil engineering projects, including roads, below-ground drainage systems, SuDS, and civil building construction. The role requires strong technical and managerial leadership, overseeing project delivery, team performance, and collaboration with business development functions to help grow the organisation’s presence and capabilities. Working Hours 40 hours per week Monday to Friday Key Responsibilities Lead and manage engineering teams both nationally and internationally. Represent the organisation at project meetings, site visits, and industry events. Communicate effectively and confidently with project stakeholders, including design teams, consultants, and contractors. Manage project workloads, ensuring delivery within agreed timescales, budgets, and quality standards. Provide leadership, coaching, and guidance to support and strengthen team performance. Lead design coordination meetings and maintain effective communication channels across multidisciplinary teams. Develop and maintain a strong network of clients and collaborators across target sectors and regions. Prepare and issue fee proposals and support business development initiatives. Manage and deliver structural design and detailing for various projects as required. Undertake quality assurance reviews of design calculations, drawings, and reports prior to issue. Support staff recruitment, training, and professional development as directed by senior management. Conduct technical and feasibility studies, including analysis of maps, surveys, and related project data. Prepare technical documents in line with Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP) and relevant design standards. Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks, including those related to health and safety. Manage design work from inception to completion, ensuring technical excellence throughout. Use engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD) to prepare detailed project drawings and specifications. Collaborate with multidisciplinary professionals to ensure cohesive project outcomes. Ensure all work complies with relevant engineering standards, regulations, and health and safety requirements. Allocate and coordinate tasks among team members and external partners. Mentor and develop junior engineers, supporting their technical and professional growth. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s preferred). Minimum of 7 years’ progressive experience in structural or civil engineering, with a strong background in building structures. Proven ability to design and analyse common structural materials, including steel, concrete, masonry, and timber. Proficiency in relevant engineering and design software tools. Demonstrated success managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and maintaining budgets. Excellent communication skills for engaging with internal teams and external stakeholders. Strong leadership and team management abilities. Experience in business development, including proposal preparation and client relationship building.
