Role: Needle Syringe Programme (NSP) / Harm Reduction Volunteer
Location: Cookson House, South Shields - 4 Hours per week on Wednesday and Thursday PM
The role includes
* Reduce stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs. Treating people with dignity and respect.
* Provide harm reduction advice in relation to the substances people who access the service are using.
* Provide equipment that meets national best practice standards
* Raise awareness about how to reduce the risk of drug related harms including injection site infections, overdoses and how to manage them
* Promote the use of take-home Naloxone (THN) and training on how to use Naloxone
* Carry out dry blood spot testing (DBST) and pathway into Hepatitis C treatment to reduce transmission of blood-borne viruses (BBVs)
* Promote and facilitate referrals to additional sources of support and advice as needed.
Role duties
* Support the team to provide a welcoming, inclusive and accessible service
* Become familiar with injecting and harm reduction equipment and issue these as appropriate
* Provide harm reduction information
* Maintain a high level of service delivery guided by our Policy & Procedures
* Record accurately the amount of equipment distributed and returned
* Feedback and communicate with the team and participate in debriefs / meetings as required
* Take part in induction, essential training and relevant ongoing training
* Report any risk or safeguarding issues to line manager/named person
* Maintain appropriate boundaries at all times
* Ensure confidentiality at all times
* Ensure the environment is kept clean and tidy
* Perform other duties which may be requested, required or directed and which are within the person’s capabilities and are reasonable to NSP

Bringing together two big organisations is not a small task and it’ll take a while to fully integrate our systems, processes and approaches. That’s why you will notice the jobs here are still branded ‘Humankind’. Next year we’ll be fully integrating our recruitment systems but for now they are separate.
