Lead Pharmacist, Medicine

We are looking for a motivated, proactive and enthusiastic Pharmacist to lead our pharmacy team in the development of a high quality and specialised pharmacy service to the Medicine services.

The post holder will ensure that the quality of pharmacy services in Medicine is recognised as a lead nationally in line with the Trust objectives.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate an excellent leadership and management skills, be flexible and work well leading a team with excellent problem‑solving & time management skills. Applicants must be currently registered with the GPhC as a pharmacist and completed the clinical pharmacist diploma. An independent prescribing qualification is essential. Successful candidates will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills and enjoy working in a dynamic and fast‑paced environment.


Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be responsible for leading the development of the operational elements of the Emergency Department and the acute pharmacy service across the 3 sites at the Trust and will work with the team to ensure the safe, clinically effective and cost efficient use of drugs. The focus of this role will be to work with the senior pharmacy and multidisciplinary team to develop pharmacy services to provide optimal patient‑centred care but will also include the implementation and monitoring of performance indicators to evaluate the contributions of the pharmacy team to the department in line with staffing, patient turnover and Trust priorities to ensure that departmental standards are met. It will also include the development of medicine‑related policies and guidelines for the Trust relevant to medicine.

Person Specification


Education / Qualifications

* Master's degree in Pharmacy
* Registered as a Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
* Independent prescriber
* MSc in Clinical Pharmacy Practice
* Recognised management qualification
* Evidence of formal management training


Knowledge & Experience

* Significant clinical pharmacy experience in an acute setting
* Experience of managing a small team
* Excellent ability to manage change within the pharmacy department and within medical and nursing teams to drive service improvements
* Experience of working as a specialist pharmacist
* Demonstrates strategic thinking
* Evidence of publishing in a peer reviewed journal
* Evidence of collaborative regional work
* Experience of delivering research projects and influencing changes in practice
* Evidence of managing and developing a pharmacy service or section
* Experience with drug expenditure reporting


Skills, Abilities & Attributes

* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise, persuade and influence the executive team, senior managers, and senior clinical staff
* The ability to identify and manage risks
* Demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral and written)
* Demonstrates the integration of research evidence into practice
* Ability to identify and prioritise service needs

£70,396 to £80,837 a year per annum inclusive of High Cost Area Supplement
