Applications are invited to join our friendly, supportive team of cardio-thoracic anaesthetists. This is a 10 PA locum appointment for six months, based at the Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital Leeds. The post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the anaesthetic team and will be based at Leeds General Infirmary.

The successful applicant should hold FRCA accreditation from the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent. They should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of admission to the Register if currently in a UK training programme, or have authorised references from the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director. It would be suitable for applicants following the portfolio/CESR pathway. The trust has a strong track record supporting colleagues to achieve specialist registration via this route.

Applicants should have established skills in cardiothoracic anaesthesia. Excellent communication and team-working skills, along with a strong commitment to teaching and service development, are essential.

Main duties of the job

* To work with other consultant colleagues in the provision of a comprehensive cardiac anaesthetic service in LTHT.
* To develop and/or consolidate expertise in cardiac anaesthesia.
* To maintain and expand the excellence of teaching and research already established within the Trust.
* To support service plans for the specialty, taking account of changes in clinical practice and new technologies available.
* To participate in and progress Clinical Governance.

The appointee must demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of cardiac anaesthesia. It is desirable that candidates have experience in teaching, quality improvement and research.

The successful appointee will have the opportunity to contribute to clinical audit activities, including mortality and morbidity meetings, clinical audit programs, and the development and application of clinical guidelines, with allocated time in their job plan for these supporting professional activities.

They are also expected to maintain and update their skills through continuous medical education, as detailed in the separate person specification document. In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update their skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

The post-holder will be required to participate in undergraduate teaching for the School of Medicine, University of Leeds.


About us

This is a full-time locum post with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary. The successful applicant will join an existing team of 160 consultant anaesthetists including 9 cardiac anaesthetists.

Job responsibilities

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist, supporting the current anaesthetists team of over 160 consultant anaesthetists including 9 cardiac anaesthetists. The post is available for six months.

This full-time post involves 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for supporting professional activities, delivered within a rota designed to provide robust cover. Your job plan will be reviewed annually with interim reviews as needed, and you will be managerially accountable to the Chief Executive and professionally to the Chief Medical Officer.

You are expected to adhere to the General Medical Council's Good Medical Practice and the Trust's Core Behaviours, participate in mandatory annual appraisals, and follow Trust leave policies (typically eight weeks notice). You will undertake necessary training, including mandatory training and continuing medical education, which the Trust supports with time and funding.

The role provides secretarial support and IT facilities, and you must comply with Trust Health and Safety and Infection Control policies, including Universal Infection Control Precautions and hand hygiene. Maintaining patient confidentiality is paramount.

Candidates must hold FRCA or equivalent accreditation and have completed a recognised higher specialist training program in Anaesthesia or be within six months of specialist registration in the UK. The appointee should demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in cardiac anaesthesia; teaching, quality improvement and research experience are desirable. The successful appointee will have the opportunity to contribute to clinical audit activities, mortality and morbidity meetings, and the development and application of clinical guidelines, with allocated time for these activities. Continuous medical education is expected, as detailed in the person specification document.

Person Specification


Eligibility, Fitness to Practice, and Language Skills

* Eligibility for full GMC registration at time of appointment with a current licence to practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Up to date and fit to practise safely.
* Demonstrated English language proficiency to communicate about medical topics with patients and colleagues, via one of the following: undergraduate medical training in English; IELTS minimum score of 7 across all four components in a single sitting within 24 months; or OET grade B in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months with candidate number.


Qualifications

* MB BS (or equivalent).
* Higher degree (e.g., MD/PhD) relevant to the subspecialty.


Clinical Experience and Career Progression

* High level of clinical experience in Cardiac anaesthesia, including trans-oesophageal echocardiography and cardiac intensive care medicine.
* Evidence of higher training in Cardiac anaesthesia and ongoing career progression.
* Ability to carry out medical research and accreditation in trans-oesophageal echocardiography.
* Experience supervising research by junior staff.


Additional Requirements

* Specialist Register or within six months of admission (for trainees in UK).
* Or have references authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.


Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

* Completed a recognised training programme in anaesthesia.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
* Experience in participation in regular clinical audits and familiarity with NHS issues.
* Participation in Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops; attendance at recognised management courses.
* Well organised with good time management and effective interpersonal skills.
* Ability to relate to and work within a team.
