Gardener – Walled Garden. A fantastic opportunity is available for a dedicated, skilled and detail-oriented Gardener to be part of the gardening team for the walled garden on a prestigious private garden near Andover. This opportunity would suit a Gardener with a passion for horticulture and a strong work ethic. The Gardener – Walled Garden will have the opportunity to contribute to the beauty and upkeep of our gardens and will be responsible for maintaining and caring for the gardens under the guidance of the Team Leader, who in turn reports to the Head Gardener.
The area maintained by the Walled Garden Team includes the Walled Garden; Glasshouses including Orchid House; propagating glasshouse; stone fruit glasshouse and display glasshouse; the Orchard Service Yard; Composting Facility; and Homewood South. Occasionally situations may arise that require the jobholder to perform other duties or tasks as may be requested by the Estate’s Management Team.
As a Gardener for the Walled Garden you will perform general garden care and maintenance by assisting the Team Leader in planning and executing garden maintenance tasks. This includes performing regular watering, weeding, pruning, and fertilising of plants both in glasshouse environments and outdoors; monitoring and controlling pests and diseases in the garden; and maintaining garden tools and equipment in good working condition. The successful applicant will plant, cultivate, and maintain vegetables, fruit, cut flowers, flowers, shrubs, trees, indoor and containerised outdoor plants and other plants; take care of indoor and containerised outdoor plants and carry out propagation of seasonal vegetables raised by different methods to provide replacement plants for the vegetable and fruit displays.
Attention to detail is important in the role and requires frequently inspecting all areas, including those not seen regularly, to ensure they are tidy and free of weeds, pay special attention to high-traffic areas in the garden and ensure that they are kept in pristine condition and respect the privacy of the estate’s residents and guests at all times.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with other members of the garden team to ensure efficient operations and coverage of all tasks and communicate effectively with the Team Leader regarding any issues, supply needs, or maintenance concerns. They will assist in managing gardening supplies and equipment, ensuring that all items are stocked and in good working condition and report any maintenance or repair needs to your Team Leader promptly.
It is important that the Walled Garden Gardener ensures all their activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations and best practices and read and understand any risk assessments and follow / implement safety protocols as directed by the Team Leaders and Head Gardener.
Together, the team ensure that the owner, all residents, team members and visitors on the Estate enjoy a welcoming and well-maintained environment, regardless of the weather or any operational challenges that may arise.
The ideal candidate will have previous practical experience in fruit and vegetable production, with additional experience in glasshouse displays considered an advantage. A solid understanding of plant care and maintenance techniques, particularly in glasshouse production, is essential. Relevant machinery certifications, such as those for compact tractors, small utility vehicles, and PA1 and PA6a, along with experience using horticultural power tools, are preferred. An RHS Level 2 qualification or equivalent is also desirable. The role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team, supported by strong communication skills and a professional demeanour.
Candidates must possess physical stamina for manual labour and demonstrate excellent time management, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively. A valid UK driver’s licence is required, and certification in horticulture or a related field is a plus. The successful applicant will be proactive, flexible, and adaptable, with a strong work ethic and a willingness to support other teams across the Estate. Trustworthiness, discretion, reliability, and honesty are critical attributes for this role.
This position requires physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. The Gardener – Walled Garden will work in various areas of the Estate and may be required to work flexible hours, including weekends, as needed of which time off in lieu will be given.
SALARY: £30,000 – £35,000 depending on experience
