Course number and title: JWB318H1F: The Art of Journalism: Literary Approaches to Reporting
Course description: Literary journalism approaches the journalistic craft as a literary endeavour. This genre involves not only telling true stories but doing so in a way that captivates the reader’s imagination using literary techniques. The course covers canonical works from the last 75 years, analyzing them as literary works and exploring their reporting methods and ethical considerations. Students can choose to develop their own literary reporting projects or analyze the works studied.
*Please note, the course delivery is currently in-person, but may change based on circumstances determined by the Faculty or College.
Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025.
Rates will follow the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
Minimum qualifications:
* MA in journalism or a related field, or relevant professional experience
* Industry experience as a journalist or editor focusing on literary journalism
* At least 3 years of teaching experience
Preferred qualifications:
* Publication record in journalism or creative writing
* Interest in pedagogy
* Familiarity with undergraduate writing abilities
Responsibilities:
* Teach the full course, grade assignments, and submit final marks
* Hold weekly office hours and respond to student inquiries via email or appointments

Note: Some vacancies are tentative, pending final course and enrollment decisions. If rates differ from those in this posting, the collective agreement rates will prevail.
Preference is given to qualified individuals at Sessional Lecturer II or III levels, per Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 agreement.
Applicants who are undergraduate/graduate students or postdoctoral fellows at the University of Toronto should apply under the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 agreement, not Unit 3.
