JOB TITLE: Locum Appointment for Service (LAS). Trust Grade ST1-3 Doctor
BAND: MT03 or MT04 dependant on experience
CARE GROUP: Postholder could rotate between care groups.

HOURS OF WORK: Full time. Less than full time can be considered
& ON CALL
RESPONSIBILITY: Yes
RESPONSIBLE TO: Assigned Consultant Psychiatrist - Clinical Supervisor
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Director of Medical Education
BASE: Postholder could rotate between bases. Reviewed every 6 months.
JOB PURPOSE:
Psychiatrists normally treat people with a wide range of disorders, including manifestations of organic brain disorders, psychoses, depressive illness and personality disorders. They work closely with other agencies within mental health. The psychiatrist works as an integral part of the team.
Working in psychiatry allows you to maintain a varied practice, but there are also many opportunities to subspecialise. As such, you could work in a variety of settings and with a huge range of colleagues.
DUTIES:
1. Taking full histories, including a mental state examination and conducting physical examination with special focus on the central nervous system for in patients and inpatient setting and for new assessments in out patient clinics.
2. Making provisional diagnosis, summarising the history and making a provisional care plan jointly with the nursing and or allied health professional staff.
3. Requesting appropriate laboratory investigations and ensuring that the results are documented in the notes. Bringing to the attention of the Consultant and/or Specialty Doctor any abnormal results if deemed necessary.
4. Act on any abnormal laboratory or imaging results and liaise with appropriate teams as necessary under supervision of the Consultant
5. Taking corroborative history from the relatives and arranging family meetings in relation to the management of patients on the ward and in respect of future management in the community.
6. Maintaining close collaboration between junior and senior doctors working in other specialities and when making appropriate of patients to other medical departments William Harvey Hospital.
7. Maintaining close working relationship with the team admin and ward clerk.
8. Maintaining close collaboration with the relevant members of the community mental health teams and Crisis Resolution home Treatment team
9. Carrying out routine reviews of patients mental and physical status.
10. Taking blood when necessary, recording ECG and other physical investigations results on RiO.
11. Participation in assessment and reviews of patients in hospital and outpatients.
12. Participation in ward rounds and MDT meetings
13. Participation in the on call day/night rota associated with the job
14. Writing clear comprehensive clinical records in RIO
15. Writing up leave medications and discharge summaries for patients in timely fashion
16. Alerting senior medical colleague in the team or if necessary any available senior medical colleague, concerns in relation to the health and safety of patients, colleagues and relatives as appropriate to the situation.
17. Providing cross cover for absent colleagues and ensuring leave is planned in collaboration with relevant others and in a timely manner.
18. Carrying a pager/mobile and responding promptly to calls.
19. Attendance at training and teaching relevant to the post
20. Attendance at supervision with the clinical supervisor/consultant.
21. Taking responsibility for own supervision by completing the agreed personal development
22. Complete allocated discharge summaries and other reports in timely fashion.
23. To have annual appraisal with Tutor/DME and support for revalidation
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
24. To develop the basic skills in the assessment, management and treatment of psychiatric patients in an inpatient settings.
25. To develop the basic skills in the assessment and management of psychiatric treatment in out patient settings, through regular attendance in a community mental health team, under outpatient consultant supervision.
26. To develop a holistic, patient centred approach to the care of patients working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
27. To develop a responsive style of care to meet the individual needs of patients, their carers and their families.
28. To develop an understanding of the biological, psychological and social contributions to the cause and treatment of psychiatric conditions.
29. To participate with the team in providing a high standard of care to patients and facilitation of their discharge into the community.
30. To develop basic audit and research skills.
31. To develop an understanding of the working of the Mental Health Act 1983.
32. To develop skills in risk assessment and management for inpatients with complex presentations.
33. To develop skills in the recognition and relevant management of safeguarding concerns for children and adults.
34. Developing skills in maintaining patient confidentiality appropriately.
35. To develop an awareness of the ethical dilemmas commonly occurring in psychiatry.
36. To develop an awareness of services provided by partnership, voluntary and third sector agencies.
TEACHING AND TRAINING:
37. There are opportunities to deliver teaching to Core trainees, Foundation trainees and GP trainees through local teaching programmes, in addition to CPD teaching sessions for members of the multidisciplinary team
38. The trainees will have the opportunity to participate in organising local and trust wide induction programmes for junior doctors
39. Arrangements are available for supervision in suitable psychological interventions
40. There are opportunities for involvement with local psychiatric liaison services
41. Individual supervision will be provided by the approved Clinical Supervisor who will provide clinical supervision for a minimum of one hour every week
42. The postholder would have access to KMPT laptop/printer & library, desk & chair in an office and parking
AUDIT AND RESEARCH:
43. KMPT has an excellent audit department that is willing to involve trainees in on-going projects, or support the Trainee in designing appropriate audit or service improvement projects
44. In addition the Trainee will have the opportunity to engage in, and/or supervise audit projects by junior medical trainees or non-medical colleagues.
ON CALL DUTY ROTA:
45. The ST1-3 will take part in the local junior On Call Rota
46. The working pattern includes Night shifts, weekend shifts and long day shifts providing cover to psychiatry inpatient units.
