Job Overview

The North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT) is recruiting a Consultant Psychiatrist to work in the Integrated Enfield Learning Disabilities Service in a community-based post. This full‑time post offers 10 Programmed Activities per week – 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and up to 2.5 PAs for supporting professional activity (SPA). The post holder will provide clinical and professional leadership and participate in related management activities. As a senior clinician, the post holder will play an integral role in the performance of the team(s), further development of the service(s), and the development of clinical pathways and priorities.


Responsibilities

* Manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff in accordance with the medical director's directions and the Trust's policies and procedures.
* Ensure that junior doctors are compliant with the Working Time Directive.
* Comply with procedures for reporting concerns about professional conduct or competence of medical or other colleagues.
* Adhere to the principles of practice laid out by the General Medical Council and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and abide by professional codes of conduct.
* Demonstrate compliance with legal obligations covering clinical practice such as the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act, and The Children Act.
* Participate in annual appraisal and job plan reviews with the relevant Clinical Director, Service Manager or Managing Director.
* Attend and participate in the Trust's academic programme, including lectures and seminars of the internal CPD programme, and comply with the Royal College of Psychiatrists' regulations on Continuing Medical Education (CPD).
* Carry out the administrative duties associated with patient care and record clinical activity accurately, submitting it promptly to the Information Department.
* Respect confidentiality as advised by professional and Department of Health guidelines.
* Adopt proper and safe discharge procedures for in‑patients in line with partnership and national guidelines.
* Implement Trust procedures that involve users in their care and as responsibility to carers.
* Commit to ensuring equitable access for people from all ethnic groups.
* Facilitate successful multidisciplinary working, sharing medical contributions with consultant colleagues in management.
* Support the financial management of the services, assisting the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services.
* Maintain good relationships with general practitioners, the CCG, Social Services, and voluntary sector organizations.


Qualifications & Eligibility

* MB BSc or equivalent qualification (desirable).
* Qualifications or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management (desirable).
* Additional clinical qualification (desirable).
* Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practise from the GMC at the intended start date (essential).
* Included on the GMC LD Specialist Register or within six months (essential).
* Approved clinician (essential).
* Section 12 Approval (essential).
* In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice (desirable).
* Holds and will use a valid UK driving licence or provides evidence of an alternative (essential).


Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

* Excellent knowledge in specialty.
* Excellent clinical skills using a biopsychosocial perspective and wide medical knowledge.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
* Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
* Makes decisions based on evidence and experience, including input from others.
* Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
* Wide range of specialist and subspecialist experience relevant to the post within the NHS or comparable service (desirable).


Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

* Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training.
* Ability to work in and lead a team.
* Demonstrate commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working to deliver improvement.
* Participated in research or service evaluation.
* Plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post.
* Reflect on the purpose of CPD undertaken.
* Experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation.
* Evidence of achievement in education, research, and audit.

At the North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT) we provide integrated mental health services to the people of North Central London living in the boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington, as well as some services regionally and nationally.
