The role

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) are looking for an experienced Flood Risk Management professional to lead technical modelling work across North and Mid Wales. You'll provide strategic direction to the Flood Risk Analysis Team, shaping national policy through collaboration with Welsh Government and specialist sub-groups. Your expertise in hydraulic modelling and hydrological analysis—including advanced practical knowledge of 1D/2D fluvial or coastal modelling software—will be key to delivering complex, high-impact projects.

Working alongside a team of experienced technical staff, you will play a vital role in NRW's emergency flood response as a Category 1 Responder. You'll represent the organisation in Tactical Command during flood incidents, as part of our flood duty rota, providing out of hours support to our Flood Warning Service that protects communities and safeguards the environment.

As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the NRW office at the above location and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

Interviews will be face to face at the Buckley office on 20 October 2025.

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.

About us

You will be joining the Flood Risk Analysis Team in North Wales, within our Flood and Water Management Department. The team provides expert flood risk mapping and hydrological modelling services within NRW and covers North and Mid Wales including the Dyfi, Severn, Dee, Clwyd and Conwy catchments; along with the coastlines of North and North West Wales.

What you will do

* Develop and define NRW flood risk strategies.
* Provide professional, strategic and technical leadership in the application of FCRM data, mapping and modelling products.
* Lead on delivery of the most complex flood risk mapping & Modelling projects/commissions.
* Provide advice and direction to senior managers, NRW leadership team and Welsh Government officials.
* Identify innovative approaches and opportunities for improvement in the delivery of the FRA service.
* Build relationships with professional partners and the WLGA, to help delivery of Local Authority flood schemes and raise awareness of flood risk.
* Actively contribute to National FRM Sub groups to build consistency, develop policy and guidance, provide technical expertise.
* Respond safely, timely and efficiently to flood incidents ensuring appropriate information is captured to inform understanding of flood risk.
* Represent NRW at Tactical Command during Flood Incidents.
* Support Health & Safety best practice by actively promoting awareness and ensuring the provision of safe working practices to comply with NRW's policy and standards.

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills

In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.

1. Educated to degree level in a science or engineering discipline with significant experience. Or other relevant qualification.
2. Member or working towards membership of a relevant professional body.
3. Excellent project and budget management experience with experience of delivering large complex projects.
4. Excellent knowledge of hydraulic modelling and hydrological analysis (expert practical knowledge of 1D/2D fluvial or coastal modelling software).
5. In depth Knowledge of GIS, systems and services, and their application in a distributed organisation.
6. Effective communication, influencing and leadership skills to enable delivery of outcomes, through collaboration, and co-delivery with an ability communicate to both technical and non-technical partners and stakeholders.
7. Understanding and demonstrable knowledge of the application of national and international flood risk policy, legislation and the standards that effect the delivery of FCRM in Wales.
8. Must have a full UK driving licence.

Welsh Language level requirements

Essential: Level A1 - Entry level (able to use and understand simple, basic phrases and greetings, no conversational Welsh)
