Specialty Occupational Therapist – Acute and General Medicine
Communication: Consistently deploy effective communication and engagement skills to build effective working relationships with all members of the multi-professional team. Communicate effectively with patients and their carers/family members, including the sensitive management of complex or contentious issues. Overcome barriers to effective communication, such as those caused by pathological impairment or language differences, by deploying effective mitigating strategies. Engage and build relationships with external agencies and providers to enhance patient care continuity and outcomes. Motivate and positively influence others through effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Write complex reports accurately describing patients' clinical status to aid effective continuing care and clinical management.
Clinical: Enact professional and legal responsibilities for all aspects of clinical practice. Carry out comprehensive assessments following hospital admission, including those with complex presentations, and develop treatment and rehabilitation plans in partnership with patients and their carers/family. Interpret and analyze clinical information to form accurate diagnoses in older adult care, consulting with senior professionals when needed. Formulate and deliver treatment, rehabilitation, and discharge plans based on clinical skills, evidence-based practice, and patient preferences. Evaluate patient progress and modify plans accordingly. Determine mental capacity for understanding and informed consent. Work within a legal framework for patients lacking capacity. Coordinate multidisciplinary interventions. Maintain accurate records using electronic systems, adhering to professional standards. Assess and mitigate risks to patient and staff safety. Demonstrate physical ability for assessments and interventions, including manual therapy. Represent Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy at multidisciplinary meetings. Participate in extended hours and seven-day service provision.
Leadership and Management: Responsible for the safe use and maintenance of rehabilitation equipment. Support supervision, teaching, and appraisal of junior staff and assistants. Undertake delegated tasks and deputize for team leads. Plan and organize own time, patient caseload, and meetings, adjusting as needed. Assist in planning staff and student schedules and organizational duties.
Education and Training: Organize and contribute to team training and post-registration education. Educate multidisciplinary groups, patients, families, and carers. Supervise undergraduate students and promote continuous professional development. Maintain a portfolio to evidence CPD and stay informed on best practices in older adult care and rehabilitation.
Research and Development: Participate in quality improvement and clinical audit projects. Implement and maintain evidence-based practice through CPD. Apply knowledge of national and local clinical standards.
