Position: Medical Examiner Officer (MEO), Grade Band 5

Hours: Full time (37.5 hours)
Responsible to: Lead Medical Examiner, Lead MEO & Regional MEO
Accountable to: Service Manager - Pathology & Bereavement Services
Main duties of the job
To support medical examiners in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of death, acting as a point of contact and source of advice for relatives of deceased patients, healthcare professionals, and coroner and registration services.
Key responsibilities include:
* Supporting Medical Examiners in death scrutiny and acting as an intermediary between the bereaved and clinicians.
* Overseeing the death certification process for all deceased patients in the Trust and in Enfield and Haringey.
* Participating in reforms to improve death certification and referral processes to the Coroner.
* Developing protocols, guidelines, and policies for the Medical Examiner Service.
* Establishing circumstances of individual patient deaths through preliminary reviews of medical records.
* Highlighting cases for assessment by relevant review teams and assisting in referrals to the coroner.

Job responsibilities
The Medical Examiner system was introduced in 2018, with recent expansions in 2024 to include new regulations and responsibilities. The current team includes four Medical Examiners and three Medical Examiner Officers, covering deaths within NMUH and community deaths in Haringey and Enfield.
Duties include supporting Medical Examiners, acting as liaison with bereaved families, overseeing death certification, and ensuring compliance with legal and procedural standards. The role requires sensitivity, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience, including clinical or nursing background.
* Experience in operational/process management of a customer-facing service.
* Empathy and self-awareness to support bereaved families.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Understanding of medical terminology, death certification legal frameworks, and NHS initiatives.
* Awareness of diverse faith and cultural practices related to death.
* Computer literacy in Office software.
