The plaster room provides a comprehensive Orthopaedic and Trauma plaster service for Fracture and Orthopaedic clinics, Outpatients, Complex casts, and advisory support to the Accident & Emergency department, Orthopaedic (adult and children) theatres, Diabetic foot clinic, and Paediatric Physiotherapy.
The post holder needs to be professionally accountable and work according to the (AOP) Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners Code of Professional Practice.
Main duties of the job
1. Provide relevant verbal and written information to patients and carers, such as plaster aftercare leaflets.
2. Ensure a comprehensive plaster service is provided throughout fracture/orthopaedic clinics and wards, including:
3. Application of back slabs for patients with simple and complicated fractures.
4. Application and removal of routine casts from clinics.
5. Application and removal of specialist casts, including:
6. Cast braces for upper and lower limbs.
7. Body casts for children, including Hip and Shoulder spica casts.
8. Making, adapting, and applying specialist braces.
9. Wedging of casts for bone realignment.
10. Assist in fracture manipulation under local anaesthetic before and during cast application.
11. Participate in teaching and facilitate staff education in the in-house plaster training course.
12. Review practices and implement improvements based on research and best practices.
13. Develop and implement audit, quality, and risk management initiatives.
14. Support senior technicians in teaching less experienced staff and other healthcare professionals in casting.
15. Assist in outpatient clinics, including patient calls, note preparation, etc.
16. Promote and maintain effective communication.

Qualifications and experience
* GCSC grades A-C in core subjects
* Experience in pediatric casting

* British Casting Certificate
* A level or equivalent
