Job Description
As the Lead Control Systems Engineer, you will develop the Control Software for our range of Active Magnetic Bearings and Drive Systems. As a leading member of a multi‑disciplinary team of engineers, you will specify, design, code, and validate application software for cutting‑edge megawatt‑scale drive systems for Naval applications.
Core Responsibilities
* Specifying, designing, coding, validating, and maintaining application software for MW‑scale power electronic drive systems.
* Capturing and translating high‑level design requirements into efficient and robust software.
* Designing, implementing, and testing control application software for converter systems and electrical drives.
* Simulating control systems (discrete/continuous) using MATLAB/Simulink.
* Writing application software for real‑time control of systems such as active magnetic bearings, electric motor drives, AC/DC converters, etc.
* Supporting commissioning and validation.
* Integrating control software into larger systems and verifying their functionality.
* Applying best‑practice engineering standards and developing robust design practices.
* Occasionally travelling to customer sites for meetings or equipment validation – typically a few times per year (a few days up to 2 weeks).
Essential Qualifications
* British citizenship with a valid UK passport (UK‑only).
* Possession of or ability to obtain UK SC clearance.
* A relevant degree in Electrical, Electronics, Software Engineering or equivalent, or significant experience in an industrial software engineering environment.
* Fluency using MATLAB/Simulink.
* Sound knowledge of:
o Modelling continuous and discrete‑time control systems
o Analyzing Bode/Nyquist plots to determine stability margins
o Field‑oriented control principles of electrical machines
o Electrical drives and converters
* Good understanding of power electronics converter systems and power converter topologies (AC/DC, DC/AC, DC‑to‑DC, etc.).
* Experience writing control software for Variable Frequency Drives.
Nice‑to‑have Experience
* Experience with advanced controls, e.g. LQR, robust control, multi‑variable feedback control systems.
* Experience modelling mechanical systems in Simscape/Simulink such as driveline shaft with torsional and bending modes.
* Good understanding of power electronics control principles, such as field‑oriented control and PWM strategies.
* Experience using Hardware‑in‑Loop (HIL) rigs and laboratory test drives.
