Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Flood Risk Hydraulic Modeller / Hydrologist to join our flood risk and drainage team, based in London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol or Newcastle offices, with the opportunity to work flexibly from home in the future as needed to achieve best outcomes. The team undertakes a wide variety of major and challenging infrastructure projects across private and public sectors.
Responsibilities
* Assist in hydraulic modelling and hydrology assessment to support the design of flood risk schemes and flood risk assessment services.
* Work on projects ranging in size from £2k to £100M across defence, transport, local government, infrastructure, healthcare, education, commercial, industrial and residential development.
* Work independently and proactively on technical aspects from project inception, determining and agreeing methodology, hydrological calculations, hydraulic model build, quality assurance review, calibration, designing simulations, and reporting in accordance with best practice.
* Collaborate on feasibility-level work for wider engineering projects with senior management.
* Take individual responsibility for a range of project types, manage them independently, and act as the client’s main point of contact.
* Instruct, supervise and mentor junior staff in the design and management of schemes; work with clients to ensure delivery on time and within cost; help manage change.
* Contribute to proposals for future work.
* Occasional travel across the UK, including working outside normal office hours.
Qualifications and Experience
* Degree level or equivalent in a relevant field; Chartered with CIWEM or equivalent preferred.
* Experience developing hydrological studies using UK methodologies (e.g., Flood Estimation Handbook).
* Experience modelling a range of flooding sources using industry-standard software (Flood Modeller, TuFLOW, ESTRY, InfoWorks ICM).
* Experience delivering flood modelling commissions to support flood risk projects and planning system approvals.
* Experience in technical reviews of hydraulic models and engaging with local authorities and Environment Agency on technical details.
* Experience in writing reports and presenting to internal and external partners.
* Knowledge of UK flood risk policy (NPPF, SPP, TAN15) and stakeholder engagement (clients, LLFA, EA, water companies).
* Experience in discharge of planning conditions and in proposing fee proposals.
* Proficiency with IT systems such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively; proven delivery to deadlines.
* A commitment to health and safety in design; ability to mentor junior team members; desire for ongoing professional development within the company.
* Full UK driving licence; security clearance to minimum SC level preferable (or willingness to apply).
