Communications & Social Media Specialist – Volunteer
Join ECO STEM AFRICA as the voice and storyteller across all digital platforms. In this volunteer role you will create engaging, high‑quality content that amplifies our mission, celebrates our beneficiaries, and mobilises public support.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and maintain a quarterly content calendar for all key social media channels (LinkedIn, Instagram, X/Twitter).
* Write, edit, and source posts, infographics, short videos, and multimedia that highlight project milestones, student achievements, and equipment reuse success stories.
* Design and execute at least one major digital fundraising or awareness campaign during the volunteer tenure.
* Actively monitor and engage with comments and messages across all channels, fostering a positive, responsive online community.
* Assist in maintaining and updating website content (news section, volunteer profiles).
* Work with in‑country partners to collect impactful testimonials, photos, and video clips from beneficiaries, ensuring safeguarding protocols are followed.
* Track and analyse social media metrics (reach, engagement, conversion rates) and provide a monthly report with actionable recommendations.
* Ensure all external communications adhere to ECO STEM AFRICA’s brand guidelines, tone, and mission integrity.
Qualifications and Experience
* Background or degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field (preferred).
* Demonstrated experience managing professional social media accounts and proficiency in content creation tools (Canva, basic video editing).
* Experience working with a non‑profit organization or understanding principles of ethical storytelling in international development (beneficial).
* Experience in non‑profit, education, or STEM‑related initiatives is an asset but not mandatory.
Skills and Competencies
* Creative Writing – write punchy, engaging, error‑free copy for digital consumption.
* Visual Literacy – strong eye for compelling visual content and basic graphic design skills.
* Digital Fluency – proficiency in social media platforms, analytics tools, and content scheduling systems.
* Initiative – proactively seek out stories and independently manage tasks and deadlines in a remote environment.
* Interpersonal Communication – collaborate with in‑country partners to obtain sensitive content.
Deliverables
* Content Calendar – implement a structured, monthly content calendar across all primary social media channels.
* Growth Metrics – achieve a quantifiable increase in social media engagement (e.g., 20% increase in average post reach or followers) during the tenure.
* Impact Collection – produce a library of at least 10 high‑quality, approved impact stories (text/visual) for use in donor and public communications.
* Campaign Report – design and report on one successful digital awareness campaign with clear targets and results.
