Job Overview
The successful candidates will be posted at Llandudno General Hospital, our elective orthopaedic hospital, which is 12 miles from the acute & trauma hospital based at Ystby Glan Clwyd. This is a great opportunity to work in the beautiful North Wales area, just a few minutes from the beach and close to Snowdonia National Park. We are a trauma unit with our local Major Trauma Centre in Stoke (North Midlands NHS Trust University Hospital).
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply. We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of suitable applications, so we encourage interested candidates to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Main Duties of the Job
You will mainly be responsible for the peri‑operative care (pre‑operative and post‑operative) of elective orthopaedic patients. You will have the opportunity to attend elective lists, though this is not guaranteed as a regular activity and will depend on availability. You will gain experience in managing trauma patients in our fracture clinics at the trauma hospital, and there may be opportunities to undertake trauma on calls at SHO and registrar level depending on need.
It is a great post for those currently preparing for MRCS/FRCS Orth exams or working toward a CESR application, or for those who want a relaxed schedule with ample time for family. It is also financially rewarding.
There is weekly trauma and orthopaedic teaching; extra teaching can be arranged for anyone sitting an exam. We have a good track record of doctors progressing to training rotations, fellowship, and CESR success. Our department has 11 consultants on a trauma rota and one consultant performing only elective surgery. It is consultant‑led and you will be supported in all aspects of the role.
Working for Our Organisation
Trauma and orthopaedic services are based at Glan Clwyd Hospital and involve trauma clinics and blended trauma & elective theatre sessions. Elective orthopaedics are currently based at Abergele Hospital, approximately 6 miles from the main base, with clinics held at several community hospitals. It is expected that elective services will gradually transfer to the base hospital in the future.
As part of the Health Board’s strategic collaboration with Bangor University, individuals interested in teaching and research who can demonstrate potential contributions may be considered for honorary titles through the University’s process.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for site visits and discussion.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
You will work in a team structure with your consultant, with continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your team and for the proper functioning of the department in line with the Operational Policy and Strategic Plan. The appointee will be rotated between Glan Clwyd Hospital and Abergele Hospital, providing comprehensive exposure to both emergency and elective care. Your work may involve occasional collaboration outside your team structure, but consultant supervision will always be ensured.
