As a Family Ambassador you will ensure the needs and views of parents, families andcarersareheard and acted on by working within the designated Provider Collaborative (commissioned services acrossa number ofproviders). You will work within the Collaboratives wards/units forAdult Eating Disorderinpatient mental healthhospitals.

You will need to be confident,engagingand compassionate, able to extend warm and welcoming invitations to parents, advocates,carersand families whoseservice usersare admitted to units.

Many families/carers willhave faced significant challengesand will require understanding and a vision of hope and optimism from you as their ambassador. Your role will be to work alongside the clinical units to ensure that the parents,carersand families are engaged in theirservice userpathway, enabling their voice and opinions to be heard and acted upon. You will work alongside clinical teams in the units to support them to build pathways and opportunities to ensure parents and families are treated as partners.

About us

Key Functional Responsibilities

Develop good working relationships with the clinical and support team for each identified unit.

Work in conjunction with the clinical team to deal with difficult issues with family/carers eg.breaking difficult news

Collate feedback from parents, carers,advocatesand families (smart survey).

Support families to resolve disputes and raise complaints if necessary.

Help Units to work with families/carersto support a discharge from hospital in the shortest time possible into the right support at home, in their own communities.

Promote and role model good race and cultural understanding.

Share information and liaise with other Family Ambassadors

Where a family or carers are experiencing distress/concern about theserviceuserspathway (including transitions/OOA/treatment) to signpost toappropriate professionalsor agencies foradditionalsupport. Including but not limited to social work, psychological support


Job responsibilities

The post holder will work with theProvider Collaborative to achieve the following coreobjectives:

Work with parents,carersandfamilies from admission to the unit to discharge.

Help parents/familiesand carersunderstand the inpatient system and processes be a source for high quality information that is easy to understand.

To work proactively with the inpatient units. Supporting communication processes between the clinical unit and parents/families; enabling units to create a compassionate and responsive approach to parents,familiesand carers.

Empowercarersto access information and to be part of planning (withserviceuserconsent).

Have knowledge and networks of the local area to support parents, carersand families with information and signposting.

To be a point of liaison with the Unit on family and carer matters, specifically quality improvement initiatives to enable more robust and inclusive engagement/parental involvement.

Help parents raise concerns where necessary andtake action to escalatethose concerns if necessary.

To act as a champion for the value of lived experienceacross services and the wider provider collaborative team.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Educated to NVQ 4 level in a relevant subject or equivalent level of qualification or significant equivalent previous proven experience.


Knowledge and experience

* Has lived experience of a family member who has been in inpatient mental health or learning disability services or who has required support and treatment across the Health, Social Care and/or Education system
* Experience of working as part of a team, engaging and supporting others in a team and receiving supervision and instruction.
* Understanding of Confidentiality and Data Protection Act.
* Demonstrates specialist knowledge of the mental health, learning disability and autism pathways through lived or professional experience.
* Demonstrates an understanding of the legal frameworks which will impact on the delivery of good quality care, including mental health legislation, human rights, health and social care act and equalities act.
* Demonstrates understanding and experience in dealing with the public/families and carers and dealing with sensitive and confidential information; including the recognition of trauma and the impact on individuals.
* Experience of delivering support to peers in either a public sector, third sector or user/family led group.
* Experience of supporting individuals to access opportunities and support, ability to signpost to other services. Able to gather information from the local services and area to develop family/parent/carer/advocate resources.
