SENCO Assistant

Location: Warwickshire

Terms: Full time

Pay: Paid to Scale

A SENCO Assistant supports the SENCO in a primary school by helping organise, monitor, and deliver support for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The role combines administrative work, pupil support, and coordination with staff and external professionals. As a result, the successful candidate will need to be confident adapting between performing clerical duties as well as being flexible to provide child-focused support within the school where needed.

Below are the typical daily responsibilities you might carry out in a primary school.

1. Supporting Pupils with SEND During Lessons

Supporting pupils 1:1 or in small groups during lessons.
Helping children understand instructions and complete tasks.
Adapting materials or lessons, providing differentiation where needed.
Supporting pupils with varying SEND and SEMH conditions
Encouraging engagement and independence in class.

2. Running Intervention Groups

Running small intervention groups for reading, phonics, maths, or other core subjects.
Using structured programmes to support learning gaps.
Recording pupil progress during interventions.
Reporting outcomes to the SENCO to ensure EHCP’s and ISP’s accurately reflect individual support requirements.

3. Monitoring and Recording Progress

Update records for pupils on the SEND register.
Record observations about learning, behaviour, or engagement.
Help update Individual Support Plans (ISPs) or support plans.
Help prepare paperwork for Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews.

4. Preparing Resources and Support Materials

Creating visual aids, task sheets, or simplified worksheets.
Preparing sensory or practical learning materials.
Organising resources for interventions or support sessions.
Managing SEND specific spaces such as Alternative Provisions to ensure the environment is maintained and fit for purpose.

5. Supporting the SENCO with Administration

Updating SEND documentation.
Organising pupil files and reports.
Scheduling meetings with teachers, parents, or specialists.
Preparing documents for review meetings or assessments.

6. Communicating with Staff and Specialists

You may also help coordinate support across the school.

Daily responsibilities might include:

Sharing pupil updates with teachers and the SENCO.
Supporting visits from specialists such as:

educational psychologists
speech and language therapists
occupational therapists

Helping implement strategies recommended by specialists.
All applicants will be subject to an Enhanced Child’s DBS check if you don’t already have a valid certificate on the Update Service.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
