Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (Upper Limb)

The post advertised is for a Substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Upper Limb Orthopaedic Surgery. It is to support a growing need to deliver treatment of patients with Upper Limb conditions from an elective and non‑elective perspective. The post holder will be joining a team of clinicians keen to deliver high quality care and innovate within the current national healthcare landscape.

The post is based at Darlington Memorial Hospital and will contribute to providing a 1 in 9 trauma service, with elective clinic and theatre sessions at Bishop Auckland Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital, satellite community hospitals and the University Hospital of North Durham site as and when required, although the latter is anticipated to be in rare circumstances.

The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities plus an additional 3% for a 1:9 on call week. There will need to be a discussion with the post holder regarding the final plan/on‑call arrangements, prior to commencement of the appointment.

This post is to complement the organisation’s current plans to establish Bishop Auckland Hospital as an Elective Surgical Hub.


Main duties of the job

Based at University Hospital of North Durham, the consultant will be involved in planning future developments in the service. The consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the department in which they work. They are responsible for the professional and educational supervision of junior staff and are expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff as well as teaching of undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.

Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful applications to the local Research and Development Committee. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the postholder’s responsibility for ensuring that they meet the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external, and will be expected to attend regularly and contribute to the weekly half‑day educational session held. The postholder participates in clinical audit and clinical governance and deputises in the absence of colleagues in cases of annual leave, study leave and sickness.


Job responsibilities

The post advertised is to complement an existing subspecialty team of 3 full‑time Upper Limb Consultants based in Darlington that provide care to patients across the Trust’s full geographical catchment. The Upper Limb Service is consolidated to the Darlington site from an inpatient treatment perspective. The post holder will have their base site at Darlington Memorial Hospital but will also include clinics and theatre sessions in Bishop Auckland Hospital and peripheral clinics.

Possession of a valid UK driving licence is essential.

Applicants should have completed their FRCS (Orth) and be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT at the time of the interview date. They should have a good overall level of experience with all aspects of Orthopaedic trauma in terms of operative and non‑operative management and have been trained to fellowship level in their subspecialty area.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* MRCS, FRCS or equivalent
* FRCS(Orth) or equivalent Registerable Medical Degree
* Research degree, masters, higher degree, or qualification such as MD


Statutory Registration

* Full registration with the GMC, including licence to practise.
* Should have attained or be within 6 months of attaining CCT in Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery at time of interview.


Special Skills & Knowledge

* Experience with all aspects of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery.
* Provider status for Advanced Trauma Life Support.
* Upper Limb Surgery Specialism.
* Ability to supervise trainees.
* Willingness to perform management role within department.
* Familiarity with the audit process.
* Evidence of active teaching of junior doctors and nurses.
* A strong commitment to under‑graduate education.
* Evidence of research experience and clinical effectiveness in work.
* Certificate of Medical Education or other formal training programme.
* Instructor status for Advanced Trauma Life Support.
* Willingness to become involved in departmental research projects and to lead some research or academic development.


Special Requirements

* Willingness and ability to participate equally in a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Proven ability to work well within a team.
* Ability to liaise well with colleagues in other specialties.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Good discipline and motivation.
* A valid UK driving licence.


Experience

* Comprehensive knowledge in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery.
* Fellowship training in shoulder & elbow surgery.
* Working with multi‑disciplinary teams.

£113,565 to £150,569 a year, YC72 Pay Scale per annum pro rata
