We have an exciting new opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer interested in decarbonisation projects to join our Carbon Shift business unit.
Our Carbon Shift consulting business focuses on delivering realisable climate action and net zero plans, supported by capabilities in heat decarbonisation, regeneration, Facilities Management, Project delivery, EVs, smart buildings, and renewables. Carbon Shift has developed strong expertise and a client base around net zero and energy transition, and is expanding to address broader climate adaptation and resilience challenges.
Key activities
The Electrical Design Engineer will support the development of renewable heat and power projects, focusing on engineering and design development of commercial/utility-scale renewable electricity and heat projects within a multidisciplinary team.
* Prepare electrical design solutions for retrofit decarbonisation projects, new-build energy centres, and heat networks, from RIBA 1 to RIBA 4 technical design.
* Carry out electrical load assessments and size switchgear, distribution systems, and equipment.
* Perform calculations using proprietary software and understand various installation and reference methods.
* Prepare design models using AutoCAD and REVIT.
* Utilise application-specific software such as PVSyst and Dialux.
* Validate simulation models and confirm system design requirements through calculations and engineering analysis.
* Collaborate with mechanical, structural/civil, architectural, energy, and specialist designers to produce coordinated designs.
* Support market research to identify new technologies and assess their suitability for projects.
* Assist in technical options appraisals to determine the best low-carbon techniques.
* Prepare design and functional specifications, contribute to tender scopes, and lead or contribute to Design Stage Reports and customer-facing documents.
* Undertake Designer Risk Assessments to identify and minimize health, safety, and environmental risks.
* Understand and comply with statutory, regulatory, and contractual design requirements.
* Account for physical and environmental constraints in design processes.
* Manage Distribution Network Operator applications.
* Work with BIM specialists to provide relevant modelling information where applicable.
* Conduct non-invasive engineering surveys to support and validate designs.
* Interpret survey data and incorporate findings into designs.
* Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
* Maintain an advanced understanding of low-voltage electrical systems design.
* Have good knowledge of British Standards, design guides, and Building Regulations.
* Be familiar with BS and IET guidance notes, health and safety, and CDM regulations.
* Produce schematic layouts and single-line diagrams from concept to detailed design with senior engineers' support.
* Possess knowledge of lighting, small power, switchgear, data, fire alarm, security, and access control systems.
* Understand stakeholder involvement throughout the project lifecycle.
* Be aware of environmental, cultural, and health and safety considerations in system design.
* Prepare draft specifications, stage reports, and tender documentation.
* Use standard industry software like AutoCAD, REVIT, and Microsoft Office suite competently.
* Understand environmental factors affecting electrical design.
