Offer description

1:1 Special Needs Support Assistant - Severe Non-Verbal Autism
Location: Altrincham
Contract: Full-time (term time only)
Start Date: ASAP

About Us
We are a warm, inclusive primary special school in Altrincham dedicated to supporting children with complex needs. Our team works together to create a safe, structured, and nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

The Role
We are seeking a patient, caring, and highly reliable Special Needs Support Assistant to work 1:1 with a primary-aged pupil with severe, non-verbal autism. You will play a key role in helping them access learning, communicate effectively using alternative methods, and feel secure and supported throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities

Provide consistent 1:1 support, building a trusting and positive relationship with the pupil.

Use visual supports, communication aids (such as PECS or AAC), and sensory strategies to help the pupil communicate and engage in learning.

Assist with structured routines, transitions, and personalised learning activities.

Support the pupil in managing sensory needs, emotional regulation, and behaviour linked to communication challenges.

Work closely with the class teacher, SEND team, therapists, and families to follow the pupil's individual education and support plan.

Provide personal care where required (training provided).

Help maintain a calm, safe, and predictable environment.

About You
We are looking for someone who:

Is compassionate, calm under pressure, and passionate about supporting children with complex autism.

Has experience with SEND, ideally autism, non-verbal communication, sensory needs, or behaviour support (desirable, not essential).

Is eager to learn strategies such as PECS, visual timetables, and sensory regulation approaches.

Communicates clearly, works well as part of a team, and can follow consistent routines.

Brings patience, resilience, and a child-centred approach to every day.

What We Offer

A supportive, friendly school community.

Full training in SEND strategies, communication tools, and behaviour support.

Opportunities for professional development and career progression.

A deeply rewarding role where you can make a meaningful difference to a child's daily life and long-term progress.
