Overview

To deputise for the Paediatric Lead Nurse with continuing responsibility for providing a seamless, safe service. To ensure the optimum, cost-effective use of staffing and resources to maintain and develop standards of care and safety as appropriate. To assist in implementing changes and maintain standards, to ensure the care delivered to families is according to relevant national access and treatment targets, national guidance, standards, recommendations, and legislation.

Are you an experienced Paediatric nurse looking to lead and develop a high-quality service? This position supports the Paediatric Emergency Department with clinical governance, patient flow, and service development.


Responsibilities

* Participate fully and provide evidence that the clinical governance agenda is active, effective and continuous throughout the Paediatric Emergency Department, including standard setting, policies and guidelines (Trust policies, Paediatric clinical policies, local Paediatric operational policies), benchmarking locally and nationally, risk management, clinical audit, and ensuring clinical practice is protocol and/or pathway driven, evidence-based or guided by best practice if evidence is not available.
* Provide leadership, management and team development as delegated by the Department/Ward Manager, allocating workloads; contribute to setting goals and benchmarking standards of care; develop tools to improve quality of service and coordinate clinical services across the ward.
* Coordinate and manage patient flow within the unit including timely admission and discharge, ensuring national targets are met where possible; promote the unit and Trust positively to patients, relatives and the local population; have knowledge of relevant national and local health policies and their impact on the service.
* Inform/escalate to Department/Ward Manager or Matron if acceptable levels of care, standards, practice and patient safety are compromised and develop appropriate actions; assist and/or lead in development/implementation of local and Trust policies and protocols relevant to the specialty.
* Manage control and quality of stocks and equipment within clinical and non-clinical areas and promote economical use of resources.
* Represent the Directorate at corporate groups and on working groups at regional and national levels; promote effective communication with MDTs, other wards, and external organisations.
* Participate in business planning, identifying areas for service development and improvement; initiate and coordinate investigations of incidents, accidents, complaints involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with Trust policies and lead investigations where required.


Clinical Management

* Provide senior nursing advice and support to facilitate high quality, individualized care in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.
* Manage and coordinate complex clinical situations, taking appropriate action in emergency or unforeseen circumstances; be clinically competent with specialised equipment in varied settings.
* Act as a clinical role model and leader for all staff, providing daily unit management, continuity of care and a high standard of nursing care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, seeking evidence-based practice to improve quality of care; plan holistic care considering physiological, psychological, spiritual, socio-economic and cultural factors influencing patient care.
* Contribute to setting and monitoring standards of nursing care within the ward; liaise with medical staff and other disciplines; ensure care is delivered within the Nursing and Midwifery Scope of Professional Practice and Code of Professional Conduct.
* Promote patient and relative involvement in management and evaluation of care; share responsibility for delivering patient care by the nursing team; maintain safe custody of drugs with compliant procedures; undertake training to expand clinical skills.
* Regularly take charge of the clinical area, ensure safe staffing levels, identify clinical risks, and implement actions per Trust risk management policy; ensure nursing documentation meets Trust standards.


People Management

* Assess and develop action plans to meet individual development needs; participate in orientation for new nursing staff; monitor performance and contribute to appraisal and revalidation processes.
* Encourage and motivate staff for personal and professional development; deploy staffing resources effectively; support team members and refer to appropriate services; assist in selection, appointment and induction of new staff.
* Ensure staffing levels and skill mix reflect workload and patient needs; coordinate and monitor off-duty, annual leave, sickness and absence.


Leadership Development

* Promote an environment conducive to learning; participate in staff education and development, including orientation, supervision, mentoring and multi-professional teamwork.
* Contribute to a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors; assess learning and development needs; develop and monitor specialty-based teaching programs to ensure objectives are achieved.
* Maintain own CPD for revalidation; be responsible for continuing professional development and overall performance of a group of staff delegated by the Charge Nurse or Senior Sister.
* Supervise and support junior nurses, students and HCAs to sustain high standards of care; share specialist knowledge and skills within the Trust where appropriate; support sharing of best practice within the ward and trust-wide.


Budget Responsibilities

* Ensure effective and efficient use of resources including stock management and equipment care/maintenance; handle patients’ valuables with safe storage and transport; authorise timesheets for temporary staff as appropriate.


Research And Audit

* Develop and implement methods for auditing nursing practice; promote awareness of current nursing research; apply research findings to practice where relevant.
* Promote and disseminate local/national/international research findings; identify audit needs, conduct audits, analyze data with support; arrange collection/analysis of data as required; participate in data collection to improve patient care.


Personal Development

* Ensure ongoing professional development and identify development needs within the Trust knowledge and skills development review process; identify self-development areas and training requirements; maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary for revalidation.

Qualifications and Requirements

You will need significant post-registration experience, sound clinical background, and a valid RSCN/RN Child NMC registration. This role is suitable for a Band 5/6 with interest in patient flow and NHS changes. 15 hours per week.
