Position Type: Full-time, 40 Hours/week, inclusive of weekends on a rota basis.

1. Job purpose
The Assistant Gym Manager supports the Gym Manager in all day-to-day operations to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all members and staff. This role is vital for driving membership sales, member retention, and staff performance. The Assistant Manager assumes full management responsibilities in the absence of the Gym Manager and shifts fall between both to ensure Management presence each day, where required.
2. Duties and responsibilities
Member experience and retention
* Provide superior customer service by promptly and professionally handling member inquiries, feedback, and complaints.
* Help develop and implement member retention strategies and gym-wide member engagement activities.
* Give tours to prospective members and effectively communicate the benefits of the gym's services.
Team leadership and development
* Assist with the recruitment, training, and supervision of gym staff, including fitness instructors and personal trainers.
* Provide regular coaching and feedback to team members, ensuring high standards of performance and customer interaction.
* Help manage staff rotas and schedules to ensure adequate coverage and smooth operation.
* Support the Gym Manager with staff performance appraisals and ongoing professional development.
Sales and financial management
* Help the Gym Manager achieve key performance indicators (KPIs) related to membership sales and revenue.
* Assist in coordinating local marketing and sales initiatives, such as community outreach events and promotions.
* Contribute to managing operational budgets, including controlling costs related to supplies and payroll.
* Oversee ancillary income streams, such as vending or retail sales.
Operational and facility management
* Ensure the facility is consistently maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness and safety.
* Conduct regular inspections of gym equipment and facilities and report or address maintenance issues promptly.
* Enforce all gym policies and procedures, including health and safety regulations.
* Assist in administrative tasks such as managing member records and processing new memberships.
3. Required qualifications and skills
Essential
* Experience: Proven experience in a supervisory or management role within the fitness, leisure, or a related customer service industry.
* Qualifications: Level 2 fitness qualification (e.g., Gym Instructor).
* Leadership: Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team.
* Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with members and staff.
* Customer Service: A passion for delivering a high standard of customer service.
* Problem-Solving: Strong problem-resolution skills and the ability to handle challenging situations with a positive attitude.
* Resilience: The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate resilience.
* Availability: Must have flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
* Certifications: Current CPR and First Aid certifications are highly desirable and may be required.
Desirable
* Qualifications: Additional qualifications such as Level 3 Personal Training or experience in teaching group exercise.
* Education: A degree or diploma in a relevant field such as sports management, leisure management, or business.
* Business Acumen: Experience with budgeting, financial reporting, and sales targets.
* IT Skills: Basic computer proficiency with experience using membership management software.
