Job Summary
The successful candidate will join our busy team providing a Consultant Ophthalmology service for inpatients, day cases and outpatients, with continuing responsibility for the patients, their care and the effective running of the department. The role also includes specialist lacrimal and oculoplastic expertise, teaching duties, supervision, clinical audit, and participation in regional sub‑specialty audit and CPD.

Job Responsibilities
* Provide a Consultant Ophthalmology service for day cases and out‑patients, with responsibility for patients, care, and department operation.
* Offer specialist lacrimal and oculoplastic expertise to serve the local population.
* Take part in the consultant on‑call rota (1:8).
* Carry out teaching duties and actively engage in the education programme of junior medical staff, nurses, and AHPs.
* Provide supervision and training to junior hospital doctors.
* Participate in clinical audit, evidence‑based practice, and clinical governance within the department.
* Participate in regional sub‑speciality audit and clinical governance, aiding continuous professional development (CPD).
Person Specification
Essential
* MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
* FRCOphth or equivalent
* Full registration with GMC
* Glaucoma Fellowship or equivalent experience
* Proven clinical experience in Ophthalmology, with broad specialty experience
* Ability to carry out high‑volume cataract surgery
* Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively
* Able to plan and develop the service
* Experience of working in and leading a multidisciplinary team
* Computer literate
* Motivated and ambitious
* Compassionate clinician
* Ability to communicate clearly with clinical colleagues, laboratory staff, and other agencies
* Experience in teaching junior medical staff
* Commitment to continuing professional development
Desirable
* Specialty specific exams
* MD/MS
* Evidence of commitment to team building
* Understanding of Clinical Governance and quality issues
* Experience in undergraduate teaching
* Formal training in teaching skills
