Job summary

Principal Pharmacist - Cancer Services 8b. Based at Barnet Hospital and Chase Farm Hospital. An exciting opportunity for an experienced cancer pharmacist to lead the cancer pharmacy at the Royal Free London NHS Trust with the support of the Clinical Lead Pharmacist Cancer role. This post will be responsible for service based at Barnet Hospital and Chase Farm Hospital. Additional funding has been secured to expand the cancer pharmacy team to provide additional prescribing and monitoring of systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT), primarily in the out-patient setting. The successful candidate will lead the team through this expansion, develop the role of the pharmacist within the clinic setting, and deliver safe and cost-effective use of SACT. The post holder will manage a large cancer pharmacy team and work to ensure excellent patient care and outcomes within the cancer specialty.

The ideal candidate will be a highly experienced cancer pharmacist seeking a leadership role with a proven track record in managing a team and service. Experience of working in cancer clinics would be beneficial.


Main duties / responsibilities

* Lead and harmonise the cancer services pharmacy team (with support of the Clinical Lead Pharmacist), delivering and developing a high-quality clinical pharmacy service for oncology, haematology, and palliative care, ensuring efficacy, safety and cost-effective drug use.
* Attend consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings; demonstrate expert knowledge in cancer and palliative care; provide a high-quality ward-based pharmacy service; manage medication histories, drug supply, complex regimens, discharge planning, and patient counselling.
* Provide pharmacy-led cancer outpatient clinics including prescribing, review, verification, optimisation and monitoring of systemic anti-cancer medicines (SACT).
* Offer expert prescribing advice in specialist areas, support evidence-based prescribing guidelines, and lead development and adherence to guidelines/protocols within cancer services.
* Develop and review Patient Group Directions and Shared Care guidelines; participate in drug usage reviews; develop patient information leaflets; ensure compliance with CQC medicines outcomes, NICE technology appraisals and other national policies.
* Collaborate with other specialist pharmacists to share best practice and liaise with palliative care pharmacist for symptom control and pain relief as appropriate.
* Responsibility for patients
* Manage own caseload and work as an independent prescriber in cancer clinics, prescribing and optimising SACT; assess patients to ensure safe chemotherapy, refer as needed;
* Provide clinical screening support for chemotherapy supply, ensuring protocols are followed, funding arrangements are in place, doses are correct, and supportive medicines are prescribed;
* Provide patient-facing medicines advice and counselling; contribute to a high-quality patient experience; manage medication error situations and respond to complaints as needed.
* Policy and service development
* Lead development of policies/procedures to ensure legal compliance and best practice (Care Quality Commission); provide expert advice on national standards and guidelines; maintain records of regimens outside the approved list; develop business plans for oncology pharmacy services; audit services to improve care.


Person specification

Essential

* Registered non-medical prescriber
* Postgraduate diploma in pharmacy practice or equivalent
* Significant experience in hospital-based pharmacy and as a specialist cancer services pharmacist
* Experience with high-cost drugs and commissioning processes
* Experience as a Band 8a pharmacist in oncology/haematology
* Leadership/management experience with staff and projects
* Experience in managing and analysing drug expenditure
* Experience writing/implementing clinical guidelines and government directives
* Experience in multidisciplinary working
* Evidence of clinical audit/drug evaluation/practice research and promotion of evidence-based practice
* Experience as a clinical pharmacy tutor with staff appraisal and feedback
* Demonstrates a whole-system, patient-focused approach

Desirable

* Advanced qualification in specialist area
* Undertakes own research
