Overview

Band 5 Occupational Therapist required for Newton Lodge, Fieldhead Hospital, Wakefield. The team provides occupational therapy across 7 medium secure wards within a forensic service, adopting a recovery based approach with evidence-based interventions. The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team and will work flexibly, including weekends and evenings, to meet service needs. The role supports service users in-patient and community-based activities and contributes to safe and effective discharge.


Responsibilities

* Provide occupational therapy assessments and treatment for service users in-patient care, prioritising based on needs, complexity and urgency.
* Plan and implement individual and/or group treatment programmes, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
* Monitor, evaluate and modify treatment to measure progress and ensure effectiveness.
* Adopt a client-centred approach, collaborating with clients and carers where appropriate.
* Conduct OT assessments addressing physical, psychosocial, behavioural, perceptual, cognitive, sensory and environmental needs.
* Provide training and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations to clients’ environments; refer to other services as needed.
* Work with other staff and clients to support integration within the local community and promote discharge planning.
* Produce OT reports for Consultants, GPs and other agencies; maintain timely correspondence related to caseload.
* Represent OT in multidisciplinary meetings, ward rounds, clinics and case conferences.
* Maintain up-to-date records and activity data in line with professional and Trust standards and policies.


Leadership & Collaboration

* Manage your own caseload and day-to-day activities.
* Assist in coordinating day-to-day activities of unqualified staff and work as part of a flexible team.
* Keep the Team Manager informed of developments and service needs.
* Participate in service development activities.


Communication

* Communicate effectively within the MDT to provide a coordinated service to clients and carers.
* Provide clear, sensitive information to clients and carers, considering background, culture, gender, age and any disabilities.
* Promote understanding of the OT role and negotiate priorities as appropriate.


Professional Standards

Work to RCOT and relevant DoH and national standards; ensure professional ethics are upheld and that records are accurate and compliant.


Qualifications & Experience

* Essential: HCPC registration; COT Diploma or BSc Occupational Therapy Degree (or Pre-registration MSc).
* Essential: Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Desirable: OT-specific assessment training (e.g., MOHO).


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Application of the OT process in a clinical setting; knowledge of current best practice in OT.
* Ability to plan and coordinate treatment packages; manage own workload and priorities.
* Analytical thinking, ethical awareness and commitment to client-centred practice.
* Understanding of MDT working, health legislation including CPA, and risk management.
* Computer literacy and effective communication skills.


Personal Attributes

* Ability to engage with service users and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
* Independent working ability, initiative, and willingness to travel around the Trust as needed.
* Flexibility and commitment to safeguarding and promoting welfare.

Details: Location – Newton Lodge, Fieldhead Hospital, Ouchthorpe Lane, Wakefield, West Yorkshire WF1 3SP. Job type – Permanent, Full-time; Working pattern – Full-time, Flexible working; Salary £31,049 to £37,796 per year. Reference C9378-F0680.
