Advanced Paramedic (Prehospital Care)

The closing date is 24 May 2026

Following the publication of our new Clinical Strategy, the role of Advanced Paramedics (AP) in Pre‑Hospital Care is an exciting development within East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) and will provide an excellent opportunity for career development within a clinical role. The posts will provide an opportunity for clinicians who aspire to provide advanced clinical management and co‑ordination of complex and challenge care to critical care patients in clinically demanding situations and environments. You will work within a team of APs, primarily delivering the Trust’s new Critical Care Desk, rotating between the desk in our Emergency Operation Centre, response vehicles and wider EMAS clinical business.

The AP will possess a breadth of knowledge, understanding and evidence of critical thinking, patient assessment and clinical care. We are looking for credible individuals with strong and compassionate leadership abilities. The AP will be expected to work across the domains of advanced practice, including audit, research, training and education with a specific focus on clinical supervision for our Specialist Practitioner cohort. This role is 24/7 and attracts unsocial hours as per the Agenda for Change section 2.

Main duties of the job

The AP will provide advanced clinical care, leadership, and education/supervision across a range of clinical settings with a primary focus on the Critical Care Desk (CCD). Working as an autonomous practitioner the AP will provide advanced clinical management and coordination of complex and challenging care to patients in clinically demanding situations and environments.

APs will work within EOC on the CCD on a rotational basis alongside operational patient‑facing duties, clinical leadership, education, and research responsibilities. The role will work as a team with other key members of EOC, such as HEMS and ICD dispatchers, to provide a collaborative approach to ensuring appropriate resource allocation and provision of clinical care.

CCD duties will identify critically ill and injured patients that would benefit from deployment of critical care support. The AP will prioritise and manage the emergency calls based on the information available, through interrogation of calls, allowing for appropriate coordination of the deployment of critical care assets.

APs will exhibit an extended scope of practice beyond that required for paramedic registration and Specialist Practice.

The AP will practice across the four pillars of advanced practice and in accordance with the Centre for Advancing Practice (Health Education England [HEE]).
