Job Description

Position Purpose summary: To assist Residents with daily routines, some domestic duties and monitoring of client activities with sensitivity to goals, purpose and mission of The Salvation Army. This role is for Hamilton, Bermuda.


Accountabilities

* The incumbent may perform all, some, or a similar range of duties.
* The safety and protection of all residents/clients/guests within the Harbour Light.
* To interact with support staff, administration, and the counseling team.
* Recognize and use building safety alarms, panic buttons, door security as required.
* Make and document regular room checks, client counts, general monitoring.
* Oversight of the Harbour Light building.
* Ensure Residents attend internal and external meetings.
* Escort and supervise Residents for external activities, events, functions, etc.
* Support Residents/facility throughout the entirety of shift.
* Performs other work-related duties as assigned.


Rationale for the Residential Care Worker Designation

The description of a Residential Care Worker was adopted in December 2001 to allow employees to focus on the role and expectation of the position more adequately in working with residents. The Residential Care Worker is considered part of the "Caring Team" … the disciplining of clients must be seen as assisting them in their recovery program – not as policemen or security guard.


Critical Relationship Management

* Communicate with guests/clients of Harbour Light.
* Communicate with other staff and volunteers in the building.


Governance

Boards and Councils: None
Internal: Clients in the Harbour Light, all staff, and volunteers in the building.
External: May have to communicate with community members, community groups/organizations, police, and agencies.


Managerial/Technical Leadership Responsibility

* Reports directly to: Immediate Supervisor
* Direct reports for this position: N/A
* May show others how to perform certain procedures.


Financial and Materials Management

* The incumbent is involved in some financial transactions in accordance with the standards of the Salvation Army policies.
* The incumbent may make small program purchases under the authority of their Immediate supervisor.
* The incumbent has no input into the annual budget.
* Any funds that are handed into the program for either a donation or resident/client must be documented in the logbook, sealed in an envelope, signed, and then placed in the mailbox on the interior office door.


Working Conditions

* The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a residential setting.
* The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions: isolation, dealing with angry people and verbal abuse, abusive people, work schedule affecting lifestyle, exposure to bodily fluids and waste, exposure to drugs and alcohol.
* The incumbent will have some local travel required. Experience moderate physical exertion; may be required to lift up to 30 pounds.
* The performance of the job requires continuously monitoring the environment, frequently interacting with clients, attentive listening, and moderate attention when recording information.


Physical Effort/Dexterity and Concentration Required

* Must be in good health and physically and mentally able to carry out the assigned duties in the working environment.
* Must have the ability to confront clients with the truth while rendering support and understanding, balancing enforcing rules and regulation with firmness and compassion.
* Must be well groomed and demonstrate a high degree of personal hygiene and adhere to the required dress code.
* Must be able to speak and understand the English language competently and to understand written and oral instructions.
* Must have the ability to communicate effectively, possess and exercise good interpersonal skills by displaying tact, courtesy and patience with clients, residents, staff, visitors and volunteers.
* Must be aware of and support the mission statement of the Salvation Army inclusive of the local ministry unit commitment statement. Must adhere to the Code of Ethics, including a willingness to respect the Salvation Army's spiritual beliefs and philosophy of service to others.
* Must ensure that all information about a client, resident, staff-member, visitor or volunteer and/or the Centre is strictly confidential.
* Must display positive behaviour towards the less fortunate, residents or clients with substance abuse or mental health challenges.

Precautionary Measures

* Universal Precautions
* Immunization for Hepatitis B
* Vaccination against Tuberculosis
* Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
* Criminal Police Investigation Check
* Non‑violent crisis intervention training


Working Hours

12‑hour shifts with the expectation to manage emergency and crisis situations. Shifts: 7:00 pm to 7:00 am and/or 7:00 am to 7:00 pm inclusive of Public Holidays.


Education, Qualifications and Certifications

* A high‑school graduate with fair administrative, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
* An alternative level of education and experience may be considered.
* Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.
* Must possess (or be working towards) an intermediate driver's licence with Community Service Certification.
* CPR, First Aid and Non‑violent Crisis Training or willingness to complete once hired.
* Experience in the social related field would be an asset.
* WHMIS training.
* Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
* Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.


Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

* The incumbent must have up to one year of related experience, including experience with frontline work in a social service setting.

* Good verbal and non‑verbal communication skills.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is BD$17.13 to BD$20.08 with a maximum of BD$24.10. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
