Job Purpose
The Teaching Assistant (Pastoral) will play a key role in supporting learners who experience emotional dysregulation, behavioural challenges and barriers to engagement.
The role focuses on:
1. supporting learners in moments of dysregulation
2. delivering targeted pastoral and behavioural support
3. facilitating restorative practice following incidents
4. enabling learners to return successfully to learning
The post holder will work with individuals and small groups, using a calm, consistent and relationship-based approach, supporting learners to develop emotional regulation, resilience and positive behaviour.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting Emotional Regulation and Behaviour
5. Respond to learners experiencing dysregulation in a calm and supportive manner
6. Use agreed de-escalation strategies to reduce risk and support safety
7. Provide immediate and short-term interventions to support learners to regulate
8. Support learners to re-engage with learning following incidents
9. Work with individuals or small groups to develop emotional regulation strategies
Restorative Practice
10. Facilitate restorative conversations following incidents of conflict or dysregulation
11. Support learners to reflect on behaviour and understand impact on others
12. Promote accountability, empathy and positive relationship repair
13. Work alongside staff to ensure restorative approaches are embedded consistently
Behaviour Support
14. Support the implementation of the school’s Behaviour Policy
15. Use consistent approaches to behaviour management
16. Support staff in managing challenging behaviour
17. Contribute to behaviour support plans and risk assessments
18. Provide feedback on behaviour patterns and triggers
Building Relationships
19. Develop strong, trusting and professional relationships with learners
20. Act as a positive role model
21. Provide consistent support and reassurance
22. Engage learners who may be reluctant or disengaged from education
Pastoral and Key Worker Support
23. Act as a Key Worker for identified learners where required
24. Support learner wellbeing, attendance and engagement
25. Contribute to pastoral plans and interventions
26. Liaise with families and carers where appropriate
Safeguarding Responsibilities
27. Promote and safeguard the welfare of all learners
28. Remain vigilant to safeguarding concerns
29. Report concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
30. Record incidents and concerns accurately (e.g. CPOMS)
31. Follow all safeguarding policies and procedures
Recording and Monitoring
32. Record incidents of dysregulation, behaviour and interventions
33. Contribute to monitoring patterns, triggers and outcomes
34. Support evaluation of behaviour strategies and pastoral interventions
35. Provide feedback to staff and senior leaders
Working with Staff and Professionals
36. Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCO, DSL and pastoral staff
37. Support consistent implementation of behaviour strategies across the school
38. Engage with external professionals where appropriate (e.g. therapists, social workers)
39. Contribute to meetings and reviews as required
