The Transport Services Team is responsible for providing transport solutions that support the Council’s Public Transport and Fleet Transport requirements.
The Transport Officer role sits within this team and plays a key part in ensuring services meet statutory and legal obligations while supporting the delivery of safe and reliable transport for our communities.
As a Transport Officer, you will work closely with transport providers and colleagues across the Council, requiring excellent communication and customer‑focused problem solving.
You will manage your own workload in a fast‑changing operational environment, demonstrating flexibility during peak periods and the ability to respond effectively to service issues.
The role
* Supporting the delivery and management of the Bus Service Improvement Plan.
* Overseeing the maintenance of bus stop waiting facilities.
* Working as part of the team on the enhancement of bus stop waiting facilities and provision of new bus stops.
* Ensuring bus stop timetable information is up‑to‑date and correct.
* Mitigating the effects of road works and road closures on bus services in the district, ensuring bus stops are closed in a timely manner, suitable diversion routes are in place with temporary bus stops if required, liaising with bus operators and in‑house staff to ensure the best outcomes for passengers, and ensuring companies are charged for bus stop closures needed for their works.
* Managing Public Transport Issues including Demand Responsive Transport and operational issues.
* Supporting the Council’s compliance with all relevant legislation and policies and procedures.
The ideal candidate would have the following qualifications, skills and attributes
* Experience coordinating or managing public transport operations such as timetable updates, infrastructure changes or service adjustments.
* Proven experience working with transport providers, contractors and partner organisations in a multi‑stakeholder environment.
* Experience supporting or ensuring compliance with statutory and legal transport requirements.
* Experience in successfully dealing with enquiries/complaints from the public.
* An understanding of demand responsive transport.
* Ability to manage workload in a continuously changing operational setting, maintaining flexibility during busy times.
* Good ICT skills including use of Microsoft applications and relevant systems.
* Knowledge of risk assessment and health and safety issues related to area of work.
