Azure Solutions Architect (Contract) IaC/Terraform | DevOps | Azure Certifications | Mission-Critical Location: United Kingdom (Hybrid/Remote options depending on project requirements) Contract Type: Day Rate Contract Duration: Initial 6-12 months (extension likely) Role Overview We are seeking an experienced Azure Solutions Architect to join a complex, mission-critical programme within the defence, aerospace, and security sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing cloud-based solutions leveraging Microsoft Azure services, working closely with multidisciplinary teams including software engineers, DevOps, security specialists, and programme managers. You will act as the primary technical authority for Azure cloud architecture, ensuring that proposed solutions are scalable, secure, performant, and aligned with customer and regulatory requirements. The role demands a combination of deep technical expertise, strong stakeholder engagement skills, and a comprehensive understanding of enterprise-grade Azure deployments, particularly in highly regulated or classified environments. Key Responsibilities Lead the architecture and design of cloud-native and hybrid Azure solutions across multiple programmes. Develop high-level and detailed solution designs and documentation to support system integration, cloud migration, and greenfield cloud deployments. Translate business and security requirements into secure, compliant, and cost-effective Azure solutions. Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to ensure solutions meet UK government security classifications, accreditation processes, and relevant compliance frameworks (eg NCSC, MOD JSP, ISO 27001). Support deployment automation and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) approaches leveraging Azure Resource Manager (ARM), Bicep, or Terraform. Conduct Azure cost optimisation, performance tuning, and cloud governance reviews. Provide technical leadership throughout the delivery life cycle, including design reviews, technical troubleshooting, and risk mitigation. Engage with internal and external stakeholders, contributing to technical workshops, solution presentations, and customer design approvals. Ensure all designs adhere to corporate architecture frameworks and enterprise IT policies. Essential Skills & Experience Proven experience as a Solutions Architect with a focus on Azure cloud platforms. Demonstrable experience delivering Azure solutions within highly regulated environments (defence, government, aerospace, or critical national infrastructure preferred). Extensive knowledge of core Azure services including: Azure Active Directory (Entra ID) Azure Virtual Network (VNet), VPN Gateway, ExpressRoute Azure Compute, Storage, App Services, Functions Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) Azure Key Vault, Security Center, Sentinel Azure Policy, Blueprints, Management Groups Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and cost management tools Expertise in multi-tenant and hybrid cloud architecture patterns. Solid experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and deployment pipelines (eg Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Bicep, Terraform). Strong understanding of security architecture and governance frameworks. Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills. Ability to operate under UK Government security classifications (SC Clearance or eligibility to obtain clearance required). Desirable Skills Experience working in Defence, Aerospace, or Government sectors. Familiarity with enterprise network integration and Legacy system interfacing. Knowledge of MOD standards such as JSP 440, JSP 604, and Secure by Design principles. Exposure to Microsoft Purview, Defender for Cloud, or other advanced security services. TOGAF or SABSA certification.
