Engineering Director
Location: Staffordshire
Salary: £85,000 – £100,000 DOE + bonus + car allowance + benefits
Our client is a well-established design and fabrication business with a strong order book and a broad product range. As the company enters a major phase of investment and change, they are looking for an Engineering Director to take full responsibility for programme management, design, engineering and quality functions.
The Role
The Engineering Director will lead more than 20 staff through their managers, ensuring engineering, design and quality teams deliver consistently across bespoke and proprietary products. The role is people-led first and foremost: building capability, influencing across functions and guiding teams through significant change. With major capex projects and process improvements ahead, this individual will set the tone for how engineering operates in the future, with a particular focus on raising the standard of design processes.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide visible, people-focused leadership across design, programme management, engineering and quality
* Manage through influence, ensuring collaboration across functions and securing buy-in for change
* Redesign and strengthen design processes to improve efficiency, governance and accuracy
* Lead upcoming capex projects and facility changes, ensuring engineering input is embedded from the start
* Build trust and credibility with customers by ensuring demanding specifications are met consistently
* Develop technical managers and future leaders, creating accountability and ownership within teams
* Embed a culture of continuous improvement, with clear metrics for design quality and delivery performance
* Act as the bridge between engineering and the wider business, aligning technical output with strategic objectives
* Work closely with commercial leadership, contributing to business development, customer engagement and new market opportunities
About You
* Proven people manager with experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams through change
* Strong track record in a design and manufacturing business, ideally with a wide product range
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) desirable, but ability to influence and lead is more important than status
* Background in mechatronics or similar multidisciplinary environment, with confidence overseeing design, quality and engineering functions
* Experience in driving improvements to design processes and embedding better ways of working
* Skilled at managing through influence rather than command-and-control, able to align diverse teams behind a clear vision
* Comfortable leading engineering input into major investment and capex projects
* Exposure to technical sales or commercial responsibilities at some stage of career, with the ability to collaborate effectively with commercial teams and support new business directions
* Strong communicator who can inspire teams, win buy-in from peers and represent engineering at board and customer level
This opportunity is suited to an experienced engineering leader who sees their strength in people management and cultural change, backed by solid technical understanding. It offers the chance to lead engineering functions through the most significant period of investment and process improvement the business has ever undertaken.
