At our Winfrith nuclear licensed site, we possess the most extensive UK & overseas authorisations and safety case of any UK commercial company. Our qualified and experienced personnel provide unrivalled insight and practical experience in radioactive waste treatment services, including radiochemistry, treatment, encapsulation, size reduction, incineration, and disposal. This enables us to offer innovative and integrated solutions to complex waste projects.
We are currently seeking a Laboratory Technical Manager to join us on-site in Winfrith.
The role
The Laboratory Technical Manager will be responsible for compliance with ISO 17025, Method Development, Machine Maintenance, Supplier relationships, SLA management, QA/QC, Lab SSHEQ, Inventory, Waste Disposals, and will serve as the Principal Radiochemist.
The candidate must be capable of performing chemical and radiochemical analyses, supporting laboratory operations with extensive experience and knowledge of analytical techniques and instrumentation. Additionally, the role involves supporting the Commercial Team with technical queries and contract delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities
Chemical and Radiochemical Analyses
* Act as Principal Radiochemist
* Receive and log samples into the management system
* Assist with sample preparation for analysis
* Support analyses following QA protocols
* Calibrate instruments and equipment regularly
* Perform instrument performance checks
* Enter data into analysis spreadsheets for verification
* Interpret data and troubleshoot methods
* Conduct QA checks and document results
* Maintain laboratory notebooks accurately
* Develop new or improve existing analytical techniques
* Enhance operational efficiency
* Deeply learn and understand all methods
* Validate analysis spreadsheets and notebooks
Supporting Operations
* Perform operational tasks and support other activities as needed
* Archive and dispose of samples and QA documentation
* Share best practices to improve ACS capabilities
Management
* Act as Department QA Manager for ISO 17025 compliance
* Represent ACS in external meetings
* Host technical meetings
* Assist with scheduling, monitoring, and regulation
* Support staff and laboratory metrics
* Assist with financial management of delivery
* Prepare and review analytical reports and QA documentation
* Develop and validate spreadsheets
* Review and approve purchase orders in SAP
* Conduct staff appraisals and reviews
* Monitor laboratory housekeeping daily
Health and Safety
* Ensure QA and safe working practices are followed
* Comply with security, safety, health, environmental, and regulatory requirements
* Promote the PROUD ethos throughout activities
The person
To succeed in this role, you will need:
Essential Skills
* Degree or equivalent in Chemistry
* Customer focus and optimization skills
* Knowledge of BS EN ISO/IEC 17025
* Expertise in analytical techniques and instrumentation
* Ability to work independently
* Strong communication skills
* Good time management
* Professional, positive, and self-motivated attitude
* Experience in laboratory and personnel management, including staff training
* Project and financial management skills
Desirable Skills
* Professional membership or accreditation in a science discipline
* Knowledge of the waste industry
* Experience with Sample Management Systems
