This is a 12-month Clinical Oncology Locum Consultant post with a special interest in Lung and Urological cancers, delivering systemic anti-cancer therapies and radiotherapy treatment. The post will support established and experienced non-surgical oncology Lung and Urology services, and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre - St Jamess University Hospital, Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and Harrogate & District Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

Attendance at Lung and Urology clinics

Attendance at MDT meetings

Prescription of systemic and hormone therapy and radiotherapy

Discussion with patients and their relatives

Initiation / change of treatments

Manage patients receiving treatment for Lung and Urological cancers

Attendance at service and departmental meetings.

Work closely with clinical colleagues and support the wider Lung & Urology teams with clinical activity. Provide mutual cross-cover colleagues where necessary.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist, with a special interest in Lung cancers and Urological cancers.

This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Lung and Urology radiotherapy services, and systemic therapy services.

The post will support an established and experienced multi-disciplinary non-surgical Oncology Lung and Urology teams and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St Jamess University Hospital, Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and Harrogate & District Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will work alongside the non-surgical Oncology Lung team led by Dr Pooja Bhatnagar and supported by Dr Kevin Franks, Dr Katy Clarke, Dr Peter Dickinson, Dr Mark Teo and Dr Alison Young). The successful candidate will also work alongside the Clinical Oncology Urology team led by Dr Joji Joseph and supported by Dr Ann Henry, Dr David Bottomley, Dr Tanzeel Janjua, Dr Juliette Anderson, Dr Rob Turner, Dr Sree Rodda, Dr Lisa Owen, Dr Emma Dugdale, Dr Finn Slevin, Dr Lisa Joseph and Consultant Radiographer - Sean Ralph.

There will be opportunities to contribute to the Harrogate Lung MDT and the Bradford Urology MDT, in addition to departmental meetings, teaching, research and service developments. This is an exciting time to join our Lung and Urology services, as we are currently looking at pathway redesign, in addition to developing the services and the wider team.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To deliver care to patients with Lung and Urological cancers at theLeeds Cancer Centre, through:

Lung and Urology Out-patient clinics (at peripheral and central sites)

Supervision of patients undergoing SACT and radiotherapy treatment

Contribution to Specialist Lung and Urology MDT meetings

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and across the Yorkshire Cancer Network.

To contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Leeds Cancer Centre. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must hold accreditation in FRCR or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.

Experience

The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of systemic therapy and radiotherapy for Head & Neck and Thyroid cancers. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in the conduct of clinical trials.

Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings

Clinical audit programmes

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

TEACHING

The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post-holder will be required to participate in theundergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.

The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in medical oncology in the Local Education and Training Board.

Qualifications

Essential

* FRCR or equivalent qualification
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
* Eligibility to work in the UK
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely

Desirable

* Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty

Experience

Essential

* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Clinical Oncology
* Specifically, he/she must demonstrate higher training in the delivery of systemic therapy and radiotherapy for Lung and Urological cancers
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
* Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English.
* OR
* Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5)
* OR
* Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (You must provide your candidate number)
* *Well organised and skilled in good time management.
* *Effective interpersonal skills.
* *Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.

Desirable

* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
* Attendance at recognised management course.
