Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Consultant in Paediatric Allergy to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team in delivering exceptional care to children and young people. The successful candidate will need to have demonstrated expertise and competence not only in the management of children with allergies, but also in teaching and research skills, as well as in NHS administration. Consideration will be given to general paediatricians with an interest in paediatric allergy and medical education, as well as those with formal sub-specialty training in the area.


Main Duties of the Post

The main activities supported by the post are:

* Outpatient clinics
o Allergy clinics for assessment of local and regional referrals.
o Regular desensitisation clinics.
o Monthly joint Allergy ENT and joint Allergy Ophthalmology and Peri‑anaesthetic Allergy clinics.
o Quarterly joint Allergy/Immunology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Haematology, Rheumatology and Respiratory clinics.
* Day case services
o Food and drug challenges (10 per week).
o SCIT for insect venom, grass and tree pollen allergies.
o SLIT initiation for house dust mite and pollen allergies.
o Omalizumab for urticaria, severe asthma and severe allergic conjunctivitis.
o Drug reaction evaluations, SPT, IDT, drug provocation tests and desensitisations.
o Evaluation for peri‑operative suspected allergic reactions.
* Team meetings
o Weekly tertiary MDT.
o Weekly clinical education meeting.
o Three monthly meetings of the Northwest Paediatric Allergy Network.

Person Specification


Essential Qualifications

* MRCPCH by examination or equivalent.
* Full GMC registration.
* On the GMC’s Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at the time of scheduled interview.


Desirable Qualifications

* Higher degree, e.g. MSc, MD, PhD in Paediatrics.


Essential Other

* Ability to fulfil all duties of the post, including on‑call commitments and travel requirements.
* Satisfactory Enhanced DBS and required immigration status.


Essential Clinical Experience

* Competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training.
* Valid Level 3 Safeguarding training.
* Valid BLS training.


Desirable Clinical Experience

* Experience working in the NHS.
* Wider experience, research, and training in providing sub‑specialty service (if applicable).
* Valid APLS.


Essential Knowledge and Skills

* Willing to work unsupervised and make decisions.
* Good communication skills, including communicating bad news.
* Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively.
* Meets the requirements of the GMC’s ‘Good Medical Practice’.


Desirable Knowledge and Skills

* Knowledge of risk management, annual job planning, appraisal review process, etc.


Academic Requirements

* Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project and understanding of their role in improving practice.
* Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence.
* Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.


Desirable Academic

* Research degree and ‘Training the Trainers’ certification.


Management Requirements

* Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS.
* Understanding of management issues including medical management, clinical governance, service planning and quality improvement.


Desirable Management

* Evidence of leadership attributes and experience.
* Evidence of motivational skills.


Personal Attributes

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues, managers, other agencies and staff at all levels.
* Energy and enthusiasm.
