Job Duties

This position is open to all current Department employees, both sworn and civilian. If filled by a sworn employee, the position will retain the rank of Lieutenant. If a civilian candidate is selected, the position will be reclassified to a non-supervisory level equivalent to the rank of Lieutenant.

Sworn employees applying for this position shall be governed by the State Police Manual and must submit an application through PageUp and must attach their SP-88 and SP-92P.

About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Aviation Division Safety Officer in our Aviation Division located in Chesterfield, Virginia. The job duties for this position include but are not limited to:

• Directs the Department’s Flight Safety Program to ensure proficient piloting performance and consistency.
• Conducts safety reviews of the Aviation Division’s training and aircraft maintenance programs in addition to daily flight operations.
• Oversees the Aviation Division’s accreditation status.
• Acts as pilot-in-command in Department multi- and single-engine helicopters and airplanes in both law enforcement and medevac duties. Pilot duties include all phases of flight planning, scheduling details, passenger briefing and assistance and routine pilot pre- and post-flight servicing and securing aircraft.

Minimum Qualifications

Working Knowledge:

• Of the principles, theories, and practices of aviation safety, cockpit resource management, and risk management.
• Of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and regulations.
• Of operation and general maintenance of aircraft.
• Of atmospheric and weather relative to its effect on managing flight safety.

Skill:

• In the operation of turbine helicopters, and single engine aircraft.

Abilities:

• To determine route and flight plans.
• To perform pre-and post-flight aircraft inspections.
• To analyze weather and aircraft conditions.
• To ensure performance of routine maintenance of aircraft and the completion of maintenance and inspection logs by certified mechanics.
• To complete necessary agency and FAA records, forms, and reports.
• To work independently and as a member of a team.
• To communicate orally and in writing clearly, concisely, completely and understandably.
• To work on-call as required.

• FAA Commercial helicopter and airplane certifications with instrument rating and FAA second class medical certificate are required.
• FAA certified flight instructor and instrument flight instructor in airplanes and helicopters is required.
• Night vision goggle certification and night vision goggle instructor certification are required.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

The individual selected for this position will be required to comply with the Residency Policy for this position as specified in the State Police Manual.

Additional Considerations

• Comprehensive knowledge of safety programs and completion of an aviation safety course, medevac and law enforcement flying missions, flight instruction in airplanes and helicopters, and pilot in command experience in Department aircraft models preferred.
