Job purpose
Shetland Islands Council is looking for someone to join the Building Maintenance team to help maintain SIC properties throughout Shetland. The apprentice will be expected to attend college, pass their course work and will have 4 years to achieve an SVQ3 qualification.
As a Modern Apprentice Plumber, you will be supported to gain the knowledge, experience, skills and abilities to become a qualified plumber, providing an effective repairs and planned maintenance service to council housing and buildings.

* Assist with carrying out repairs and maintenance in a professional manner.
* Trace and repair plumbing defects and identify appropriate measures to make good repairs.
* Remove and install new heating and water systems along with kitchen and bathroom upgrades.
* Assist with requisitioning materials, plant and appropriate resources.
* Travel to council properties across Shetland and work in a clean, tidy and careful manner in order to protect tenants/occupiers belongings.
* Work from scaffolding and in confined spaces and carry out incidental builders work.
* Assist with and carry out basic risk assessments to ensure appropriate health and safety control measures are followed.
* Communicate with building occupiers and tenants to explain the nature of the works being carried out eg. time-frames, access requirements, risks, etc.
* Adopt appropriate systems and practices that will support service improvements.
* Demonstrate taking personal responsibility for council assets – vehicles, plant and other equipment.

Courteous manner
An interest in plumbing / repair and maintenance work to houses or public buildings
Two Standard Grades at 3
or above
Two National 5s at A,B,C
In subjects such as English, Maths, Science, Technical Subject

Ability to work at height and in confined spaces
Ability to work within a team
Good problem solving skills
