A Vacancy at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

We have a fantastic opportunity for you to join our Clinical Nurse Specialist team, supporting the Acute Oncology and Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Service at UHCW NHS Trust. The successful postholder will work 22.5 hours per week in Acute Oncology and 15 hours per week in TYA.


Acute Oncology

The team is pivotal in providing early input of specialist oncology assessment, advice and clinical management for unscheduled oncology emergency admissions with regard to complications related to non-surgical cancer treatment, complications of cancer or suspected unknown primary cancer.


TYA

The TYA CNS will work closely with the Clinical Lead for TYA, site‑specific multidisciplinary Teams, and the TYA Principal Treatment Centre (PTC), University Hospital Birmingham. Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience of working with young people with a cancer diagnosis, experience of malignant haematology and / or oncology. The role will be to provide support and advice for patients aged 13‑25 years old and work alongside site specific oncology and haematology teams.

We are looking for an inspirational and forward‑thinking nurse. You must have extensive oncology/chemotherapy/haematology experience and be able to provide sound clinical decision‑making skills.

This role will involve weekend and bank holiday working.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.


Acute Oncology (AOS) Responsibilities

* Ensure timely, effective, and improved care for patients with complications of non‑surgical cancer treatment (early recognition, better treatment, nurse‑led discharge and reduce length of stay).
* Ensure timely, effective and improved care of patients with complications of cancer (early recognition, better treatment, rapid referral back to specialist oncology team, palliative care team etc).
* To ensure proactive delivery of preventative care to minimise the risks of the effects of non‑surgical cancer treatment.
* The post holder will work alongside other clinical colleagues in oncology, haematology, palliative care, emergency care, acute medicine, radiology, and pathology to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised. This will include the development of clinical guidelines and education programmes.


TYA Responsibilities

* The post holder will be a designated TYA CNS within the hospital and will provide expert specialist advice to patients, relatives, carers and other HCPs.
* To be an active member of the appropriate site‑specific MDTs, including participation in the PTC MDT meetings, ensuring that all TYA's are referred to the MDT.
* Work closely with the PTC TYA to ensure alignment of goals and priorities between national and local modernisation initiatives and ensure support and transition from children services to TYA and then to adult services.


Additional Responsibilities

* As part of the AO team, the post holder will provide advice to patients receiving non‑surgical cancer treatment, make an assessment of the patient over the telephone and put into place a plan of care/follow up or advice for the patient.
* The AO Team are also the Key worker for Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) patients undergoing investigations for a malignancy of unidentified origin.
* As part of the AO team, the post holder will support 2 MDTS: MSCC weekly and CUP. The post holder will attend and assist the MDT coordinator to ensure correct outcomes are recorded & actioned.
* Provide nurse‑led assessments throughout the hospital including the acute oncology assessment bay and other inpatient and outpatient areas across the trust.
* Utilise non‑medical prescribing and advanced health assessment skills to make sound clinical judgements.
* Request radiological examinations for oncology/haematology patients including chest/abdominal x‑rays and ultrasound abdominal scans.
* As TYA CNS, work alongside the leadership team at the PTC at UHB and establish links with the TYA CNS working in other TYA designated centres.
* To ensure that the patients holistic needs are considered in the decision‑making process.
* As TYA CNS, acting as a resource for staff, advising on national, local and trust policy and procedures / guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
* Accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute towards corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
* Highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of high‑quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations.
* A knowledgeable team leader, supporting staff, service and policy development within a defined area/speciality.
* A resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
* Responsible for identifying and assessing complex clinical and non‑clinical issues, implementing resolutions and monitoring/auditing outcomes.
* Undertake highly specialised technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including complex patient monitoring; equipment management and defined expanded clinical roles e.g suturing.
* Responsible for training provision of identified staff groups within defined areas.
* Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce, and resource data available.
* Regularly manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
* Support patients, carers and staff during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g breaking bad news or following an unexpected event.
* Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.


Working Hours and Conditions

The role will involve weekend and bank holiday working. The postholder will have flexibility across the 22.5/15 hour split between Acute Oncology and TYA over the week.
