The Role: The Payroll Manager is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll, pensions, and employee benefits across Horizon Leisure Centres. A hands-on role that requires you to: Managing end-to-end monthly payroll for all employees, including starters, leavers, and contractual changes. Overseeing payroll year-end processes, including the production and submission of P60s, P11Ds, and HMRC returns. Administering pension schemes (e.g. LGPS), ensuring compliance with auto-enrolment legislation and accurate contributions. Managing employee benefits including health, life, and wellbeing benefits – processing, renewals, and provider liaison. Preparing and processing payroll journals and collaborating with Finance for payroll reconciliation and accurate financial reporting. Handling payroll queries and resolving discrepancies in a timely and professional manner. Ensuring accurate and up-to-date payroll data across HR and finance systems. Coordinating the annual pay review process and ensuring payroll reflects promotions, transfers, and terminations. Managing special payroll cases (e.g. maternity, sickness pay) in line with statutory requirements. Calculating and managing tax, National Insurance, and any local taxation obligations. Monitoring legislative changes in payroll and pensions, and ensuring compliance and continuous improvement. Maintaining confidentiality of employee records and adherence to data protection legislation. Supporting the delivery of People & Culture projects and wider organisational initiatives. Developing and reviewing payroll policies and procedures to improve efficiency and compliance. Training and supporting others involved in payroll processing. Your Experience: Essential: Proven experience managing UK payroll, year-end processes, P11Ds, and payroll journaling. Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, tax, NI, pension schemes & benefits administration. Experience with pensions auto-enrolment and benefits administration. Desirable: Familiarity with Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). Experience with integrated HR/payroll systems. Experience of using Sage 50 Payroll. Qualifications: CIPP, QBE or other relevant payroll qualification (desirable). Skills and competencies : Strong communication and relationship building skills. Very organised with a high level of accuracy, discretion, and attention to detail. Proficient in payroll software use and Microsoft Excel. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
