Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi – About the Role
Ara Institute of Canterbury is seeking an experienced Capital Works Programme Manager to lead the planning and delivery of a diverse capital works programme that supports our ākonga (learners), kaimahi (staff), and organisation.
This role is central to the implementation of Ara’s Campus Master Plan, which focuses on strengthening, modernising, and consolidating our physical environment to ensure our campuses are safe, fit for purpose, sustainable, and financially viable.
You will manage complex, multi million-dollar capital projects across Ara’s portfolio, including major refurbishments and building programmes such as the L Block refurbishment.
Reporting to the Head of Facilities Management, this is a hands‑on, senior role where you will provide end‑to‑end programme leadership across multiple capital projects, working closely with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.
Key responsibilities include:
* Leading the planning, prioritisation, and delivery of Ara’s capital works programme
* Managing multiple projects across different sites, budgets, and timeframes
* Providing strong governance, reporting, and assurance to Ara’s leadership team and Council across all stages of delivery
* Engaging with internal stakeholders to understand needs and translate these into practical project outcomes
* Providing leadership to the Project Manager, consultants and contractors, including procurement, performance, and budgets
* Ensuring compliance with health and safety, statutory, and organisational requirements
This role plays a key part in shaping and maintaining Ara’s physical environment and campus experience.

You will bring a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach and be comfortable working across complexity. You will also have:
* Significant experience in Programme, Project and Change Management in a large organisation at a senior level
* Proven experience managing capital works programmes or complex construction projects, including multi-million-dollar budgets
* Strong project governance and financial management capability
* Experience working with external consultants, contractors, and suppliers
* Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
* A sound understanding of health and safety and regulatory requirements and its application to construction
* Relevant qualification in project management, construction, engineering, or a related field
* Experience working in a large, complex organisation is desirable.
