Consultant – Cardiothoracic Intensive Care
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Cardiothoracic Intensive Care at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This post has arisen due to expansion of services and is suitable for both newly qualified and existing consultants in search of a new opportunity.
Overview of the Trust: The Trust provides tertiary cardiothoracic facilities for 1.6 million people of Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Lancashire Cardiac Centre, commissioned in July 2006, is one of four regional centres for Cardiothoracic surgery. It houses catheter labs, four operating theatres and 20 critical care beds, along with associated ward beds and dedicated educational and research facilities.
Departmental duties: The department provides anaesthetic cover for minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery, major aortic work, routine cardiac and thoracic procedures, TAVI, device extraction/implants and electrophysiology work. Cardiothoracic intensive care is an adult intensive care unit managed by Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists and comprises 20 beds – 12 Level 3 and 8 Level 2 – without physical separation between HDU and ITU. Approximately 1,500 patients are admitted each year, with 75 % post‑cardiac surgery and the remainder following thoracic surgery or cardiology procedures.
