Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to take on a senior role in the Haemophilia Assays Section at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, part of the South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Pathology network.

As an Advanced Biomedical Scientist (Band 7), you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, specialist coagulation testing that directly supports the care of patients with bleeding disorders. The role combines hands‑on expertise in highly complex assays with opportunities to lead, supervise and train others, contribute to research and innovation, and ensure services meet the highest standards of quality and accreditation.

We are looking for an HCPC‑registered Biomedical Scientist with strong specialist knowledge in coagulation and haemostasis, excellent technical and analytical skills, and the ability to interpret complex results with clinical relevance. You will need experience in quality management, troubleshooting, along with the leadership skills to support, train and inspire colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will supervise and work within the Haemophilia assays section, performing and interpreting highly complex coagulation investigations to deliver accurate, timely results that may carry significant clinical and medico‑legal implications.

They will ensure compliance with ISO 15189 quality standards through audits, quality control, SOP maintenance, and participation in accreditation processes, while also supporting research, service development, and the evaluation of new methods and technologies. Responsibilities include maintaining and troubleshooting specialist equipment, managing work rotas, training and supervising junior staff, and deputising for senior colleagues when required.

The role also involves liaising with clinicians, laboratory users, and external stakeholders, prioritising urgent clinical needs, and representing the service at meetings to promote harmonisation, innovation, and continuous improvement across the SYB network.

Person specification


Education and Qualifications

* HCPC registered
* Post graduate qualification equating to Master's level in a relevant subject such as FIBMS (Haematology) or MSc (eg Pathological Sciences or equivalent) or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (Haematology), or equivalent evidence of extended practice in haemostasis.
* IBMS Specialist portfolio (Haematology) or other BMS (Blood Sciences) specialist qualification
* Evidence of continual professional development


Experience

* Extensive experience in haemophilia related and allied disorders laboratory assays
* Experience of other areas of coagulation testing
* Experience in application and monitoring of UKAS standards.
* Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities


Skills and Knowledge

* Ability to Lead a Team
* Effective Communication skills, written and oral
* Evidence of effective time management skills and with a methodical approach
* Ability to motivate oneself and other staff
* Ability to deliver new services


Personal Qualities

* Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory training and required laboratory competences
* Ability to plan, prioritise and allocate work and work under pressure.
* Ability to work individually and as part of a team
* Prepared to work flexibly including participation in weekend and evening work and out of hours rota as required
* Commitment to Providing 8am-8pm service and weekend out-of- hours work.
