The role

In-Custody Case Worker

Salary: £28,755

Location: HMP Sudbury with travel to other prison sites across Staffordshire and the Black Country

Contract: Full Time Permanent

Rebuilding your life after a custodial sentence is one of the toughest challenges a person can face. But with the right support, it's possible. We are looking for a Case Worker to join our team – someone with a rare mix of compassion, resilience, organisation and flexibility. This role involves rolling up your sleeves and proactively supporting individuals on their journey toward rehabilitation.

In this role, you will work within the prison, providing one-to-one support to a caseload of participants who are in the last 12 weeks of their sentence. You will help them prepare for release, overcome barriers, build confidence and take meaningful steps toward reintegration, promoting engagement with community hubs after release. You will work closely with pre‑release, gate and through‑the‑gate teams to ensure participants receive comprehensive support throughout their transition.

Responsibilities

  • Relationship Building: Foster genuine, trusting, and non‑judgemental relationships with participants, creating a safe space for personal growth.
  • 1:1 Support: Set and review goals while ensuring accurate and timely recording.
  • Action Planning: Formulate detailed action plans identifying specific needs and barriers, and determine the support required for transition.
  • Caseload Management: Manage multiple individuals, balancing their needs while maintaining all related administration.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with the wider prison community, generate referrals to the programme and build your caseload.
  • Escorting: Drive participants to Ingeus sites, job placements and training opportunities in our minibus.

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills – the ability to engage, motivate, persuade, and listen, building strong connections with participants and stakeholders.
  • Safeguarding awareness – able to identify safeguarding risks and operate within established protocols.
  • IT and administrative proficiency – maintain meticulous records of interactions to measure progress.
  • Resilience – the capacity to stay committed and see outcomes through, even when progress is slow.

Applicants are required to obtain an enhanced DBS check and HMPPS EL1 vetting. Successful candidates will be offered a start date at least six weeks from the point of job offer to allow sufficient time for pre‑employment clearances.

Benefits

  • 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, with the option to trade for additional leave.
  • EAP Support programme available 24/7, including 6 free counselling sessions.
  • Private medical insurance and life assurance.
  • Up to 2 days of Community Giving (volunteering) each year.
  • Eyecare vouchers.
  • Online shopping discounts.
  • Cycle to Work scheme and travel season ticket loan.
  • Long‑service awards.
  • Salary Finance programme offering financial education and advice.
  • Option to purchase additional benefits such as critical illness cover and dental insurance.
